Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6339 — Community

Volume 17 · Letter 195

By the grace of Hashem*,

25 Sivan* 5718,

Brooklyn,

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I am responding to your letter of 20 Sivan* and I am surprised that you tell me nothing of your advancement in the Torah* and the mitzvos*. Moreover, I have already written to you that, if every Jew must fully fulfill the Torah* and the mitzvos*, how much more must this be done by those who are in the army, of whom an increased holiness is therefore expected. Moreover, their conduct has an impact on the community and on its security, as it is said (Devarim* 23:15): "For, Hashem* your Elokim* goes back and forth in your camp, in order to save you and to place your enemy before you. Your camp shall be holy and no indecency shall be seen therein, lest He turn away from you." And, from a positive statement, one can deduce a negative formulation, that is, that one who, finding himself in a military camp, does not conduct himself in a holy manner, thereby opposes the presence of "Hashem* your Elokim*" within "your camp," the salvation and the fall of enemies before the army. Is there a more dreadful revolt against the security situation of the army?

I hope that these few lines will suffice not only to influence your conduct in a positive manner, in accordance with what has just been said, but also for you to guide your friends in this direction. It is certain that an effort is never in vain, provided that the words emanate from the heart. They then penetrate into the heart of the one who hears them. With my blessing to convey good news of all this,

On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,

the secretary,

N.B.: You surely know the story of the festival of liberation of 12 and 13 Tammuz*. You will therefore endeavor to participate in one of the Chassidic* gatherings that are organized, on this occasion, these days, in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt.
