To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Rav Elyakim Yehudah (note 1: Rav E. Y. Geller, of Saverne),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I am responding to your letter of this Sunday. At a propitious moment, I will mention all those you cite at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, in conformity with what you write to me.

It is surely unnecessary to underscore to you that every Jew is an emissary of Hashem*, blessed be He, charged with spreading the Torah* and the mitzvos*, with illuminating in this way the darkness of the world, as it is said: "For, the candle is a mitzvah* and the Torah*, a light." How much more does one who exercises an influence on the youth have the obligation and the merit to do so. Among your students, there are surely some Jews and, even if the subject you teach is not directly related to the Torah* and the mitzvos*, it is clear that you will be able to use your influence, in this fundamental domain, to bring the hearts of these students closer to our Father Who is in heaven, by leading them to the effective practice of the mitzvos*, as it is said (note 2: Koheles* 12:13): "Fear Hashem* and observe His mitzvos*." The merit of the public comes to your aid in order to know success in this matter, in the manner of Hashem*, Who acts "measure for measure" (note 3: In the manner in which one acts toward Him), but in a greatly increased proportion. His blessing will therefore be increased and you will derive from your children much Jewish and traditional satisfaction. With my blessing to convey good news,

וובודאי למותר לעוררו שכמו שכל אחד מישראל הוא שלוחו של המקום ב"ה להפיץ את התורה והמצוה ולהאיר עי"ז את החשך של העולם, וכמ"ש כי נר מצוה ותורה אור, עאכו"כ שזהו מחובתו וזכותו של מי שיש לו השפעה על הנוער, והרי בודאי בתוך תלמידיו נמצאים כמה מבני ישראל אשר למרות שהמקצוע שהוא לומד אותם, אינו באופן ישר ענין התורה והמצוה, בודאי שיכול לנצל השפעתו האמורה בענין חיוני זה, כוונתי לקירוב לבן של אלו תלמידיו לאבינו שבשמים ע"י שיתקרבו לקיום המצות בפועל וכמ"ש את האלקים ירא ואת מצותיו שמור כי זה כל האדם, וזכות הרבים מסייעתו להצלחה בפעולה האמורה, ובמדתו של הקב"ה שהיא מדה כנגד מדה אלא שכ"פ ככה, הרי יתוסף בברכת השי"ת ברוב נחת אמיתי יהודי מסורתי מילידיהם שיחיוו
