Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6334 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 17 · Letter 190 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu

By the grace of Hashem*,

24 Sivan* 5718,

Brooklyn,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Rav Ephraim (note 1: Rav E. Greenblatt, of Memphis, Tennessee. See, on his subject, Letter no. 6086), the Shochet*,

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I have duly received your letter of 20 Sivan* and you will find below the response to the questions you formulate therein. I am surprised that you do not mention the time you fix for the study of Chassidus*. No doubt you have intensified it since your last letter, for it is a clearly formulated Injunction to know elevation in the domain of holiness. How much more so is this the case for the study of the Torah*, since, in the words of the holy Zohar*, volume 1, page 12b, it is appropriate to "develop it" and you will consult the Torah Or*, of the Alter Rebbe*, in the Chassidic* discourse entitled: "Who is like Hashem* our Elokim*?" and its commentary. No doubt you will specify all of this to me at the next opportunity. With my blessing to convey good news.

Regarding your questions:

A-B) The Tanya*, at chapter 39 and at the beginning of chapter 40, as well as the Shulchan Aruch* of the same author, in the laws of Torah* study, chapter 4, at paragraph 3, specify that, when the forces of evil cause the downfall of Torah* study undertaken by a certain man, his Teshuvah* is necessary to restore it and elevate it. In such a case, there is no need to study it once more (note 2: The same text which, the previous time, had been enclosed in the forces of evil). The object of the Teshuvah* is effectively to bring elevation to what has been done and to the sparks of Divinity.

C) How did Amram contract a new union with Yocheved* and for what reason did he do so? There exist, on this subject, divergent Midrashim*:

1. Miriam had said: "Your decree is harsher..." (note 3: Than that of Pharaoh, who decreed only the death of the boys, whereas your decision affects both the boys and the girls). Its annulment therefore also had to be public, in order to make it totally disappear and for all to take back their wives in turn, as tractate Sotah* and the Pesikta Rabbasi*, at chapter 43, state.

2. A Divine Injunction to this effect had been made to Amram (note 4: To take back his wife), in a discreet manner, according to the Zohar*, volume 2, at page 19a. And, the words of the Or HaChaim*, commenting on the verse Bamidbar* 3:39, are based on the holy Zohar*, as he clearly specifies.
