Igrot Kodesh · Letter 630 — Prayer

Volume 3 · Letter 235 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem,

21 Sivan 5710,

To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav C. Z.,[1]

I greet you and bless you.

I received your letter of 9 Sivan, which describes in detail the situation of your city, and I thank you very much for it.

I was very pleased to learn of the classes that are being given publicly, in particular those of Chassidus*, and more specifically, those that deal with the texts of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, our leader.

No doubt, you will strengthen yourself in this area and Hashem will help you. You will surely tell me which Talmudic tractate you are studying. Likewise, you will publicize its conclusion, in the appropriate manner, in order to make this study known and to multiply the number of those who participate in it.

I am surprised that you do not mention the study of Tanya.

You no doubt strive to have, among the participants in these classes, those who, for now, are not yet Chassidim. You know how important this was to my father-in-law, the Rebbe.

Concerning those who speak during the prayer, it would be good to hang on the wall of the beis midrash* the text of chapter 24 of Igeres HaKodesh, and the announcement of the [Rebbe Rashab][2] on the necessity of listening to the reading of the Torah. Chassidim of Tel Aviv or Yerushalayim no doubt possess this document, which is also printed in the first collection of letters of the Rebbe, edited by Rav A. Pariz.[3]

Regarding the study of Mishnah* by heart, you have surely seen the letters of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, on this subject, which are found in the second collection of his letters.

Why was Mishnah specifically chosen? I have explained this, in my humble opinion, in the fourth issue of Kovetz Lubavitch.[4]

Concerning the mikvaos* of Kfar Chabad, built in the best possible way, I thank you for giving me a precise description. Are they connected to a spring or filled with rainwater, by hashakah or in another way? In what manner are they maintained? Do you know any customs in this area, in addition to those that have been set forth by Rav Y. Landa?[5]

On the occasion of your seventieth birthday, for long days and good years, may Hashem grant that you may have all your strength, in order to explain and to bring out that "Hashem is upright" — according to the explanation of Likkutei Torah Re'eh, at the end of the Chassidic discourse entitled "Ki Sishma."

In this regard, our Sages teach, at the end of the fifth chapter of Avos, that at sixty one attains old age, and at seventy, ripe old age. A well-known question is asked on this point by the writings of the Arizal, and cited by the Meorei Or, at the end of chapter 7. These writings indeed place old age at fifty and ripe old age at sixty.

A difference results from this for determining whether one who reaches this age must be a sage or whether his old age suffices, whether one must rise when he arrives and honor him. You will consult the tractate Kiddushin 32b, the Tur Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah, chapter 244, the Sha'ar HaMitzvos of the Arizal, on Parashas Kedoshim. This point will not be developed here.

You will also see the Likkutei Torah, at the end of the commentary on the verse "I am black,"[6] according to which ripe old age is connected to the level of Arich Anpin, the source of great mercy and great kindness, of which you will dispose throughout your life.

Greeting your entire community,

Rav Menachem Schneerson
