Volume 17 · Letter 150 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem*,

4 Sivan* 5718,

Brooklyn,

To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Shneur Zalman (note 1: Rav S. Z. Garelik, Rav* of Kfar Chabad*. See, on his subject, Letter no. 6190),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I have duly received your letter from the day of the Hillula* of Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai* (note 2: Lag BaOmer*), with the list that was attached. I thank you for having taken the trouble to transmit it to me. May Hashem* grant that you announce to me good news, of a true good, that will not merely aim to reassure me or to find extenuating circumstances, although this too is essential. The Mishnah* explains the importance of granting extenuating circumstances and our Sages* say that "you shall love your fellow as yourself" is "a great principle of the Torah*." For all that, it is quite clear that the good news is more perfect when one modifies the reality, so that these extenuating circumstances become unnecessary. As I told you when you were here, you are the "master of the place" (note 3: The Rav* of the city). Now, our Sages* specify that Rav* was also the master of the brigands who were in the vicinity, that he therefore exercised his influence also upon them. How much more is this the case for Chassidim* and students of the Yeshivah*, in whom our masters invested their profound and essential strengths. The same applies to those who came subsequently (note 4: Who became Chassidim* subsequently), for our Sages* say: "By approaching what is fat, one becomes fat oneself." Now, regarding "what is fat," it is known that "oil permeates everything." This is self-evident.

We find ourselves in the days of preparation for the festival of Shavuos*, time of the giving of our Torah*, of which it is said that it was: "engraved (Charut*) upon the Tablets" and our Sages* teach: "Do not read Charut*, engraved, but Cheirus*, freedom," for it frees from all troubles. You will therefore convey good news, of a true good, a visible and tangible good, in all communal domains as well as in what concerns you personally. From the day of your birthday, which is approaching, you will redouble your ardor in this regard, for long days and good years, which will be good in every sense of the term (note 5: See, on this subject, Letters no. 1960, 2016, and 2050). With my blessing, according to the expression of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, to receive the Torah* with joy and depth,
