Volume 17 · Letter 146
By the grace of Hashem*,
2 Sivan* 5718,
Brooklyn,
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I am responding to your letter from the eve of Shabbos*, in which you briefly describe your activities aimed at spreading the wellsprings (note 1: Of Chassidus*). You tell me that you deliver Chassidic* discourses in the study house, which is known as a bastion... (note 2: Presumably of opposition to Chassidus*). Many have thus drawn closer to the ideal of Chassidus*. You must therefore lead them to be as close as possible. One can indeed verify in practice that, through what is called the atmosphere of Chassidus*, and of course without calling into question the time devoted to its study proper, the closeness achieved is faster and more significant.
You speak of the engagement and you tell me that some propose that you dress in a more modern fashion. It is clear that there is no reason to satisfy such a demand, which is indicative of the state of mind of the young woman, her family, or both at once. If such conditions are set from the outset, one can understand what will result in the near future and subsequently. Indeed, seeking to marry does not mean placing oneself in a situation of conflict regarding the Torah* and the mitzvos*. In such a case, how can one know who will prevail? It is impossible that harm does not result for both at once. It is, moreover, about this that it is said: "A nation will rise against the other" and "sometimes one prevails, sometimes... (note 3: The other prevails, and then the first stumbles)."
I must, however, specify that I am surprised by your question. Indeed, those who fear the word of Hashem* are numerous in the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt. And, may Hashem* multiply them. Among them, one can surely find those who formulate the opposite demand (note 4: Who do not seek modernity), thus preserving the tradition of their ancestors, which is an integral part of the Torah*. I am surprised that you do not mention the campaign for distributing Matzah Shemurah* and the Lag BaOmer* campaign. No doubt you will do so on the next occasion. With my blessing to receive the Torah* with joy and depth,
