Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6279 — Teshuvah

Volume 17 · Letter 134 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem*,

26 Iyar* 5718,

Brooklyn,

To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Yitzchak (note 1: Rav I. Dubov, of Manchester. See, on his subject, Letter no. 5498),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

After a long interruption, I have received your letter of 19 Iyar*, as well as the request for a blessing which will be read, at a propitious moment, at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. I am surprised by such an interruption in your correspondence and, even in the present letter, I have found nothing that fully justifies it.

You tell me that your grandson, Aharon Mendel, to whom Hashem* will grant long life, is becoming Bar Mitzvah* during the month of radiance (note 2: That of Iyar*), this year. May Hashem* grant that, from the age of thirteen, he advance to that of fifteen and to the study of the Gemara*, that you derive from him much true satisfaction, a Jewish and Chassidic* satisfaction. I have already responded, some time ago, to your brother-in-law, Rav Nissenbaum, and he has surely received my letter. On the occasion of the festival of Shavuos*, which is approaching, I send you my blessing, according to the terms of our master, my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, to receive the Torah* with joy and depth. With my blessing to convey good news,

N.B.: I send you, enclosed, a copy of my letter addressed to all, on the occasion of the annual meeting of the Chabad* women and girls. Its content applies throughout the year (note 3: See the preceding letter). No doubt you will make use of its content in the appropriate manner.

You cite tractate Nedarim* 10a, which says: "The Chassidim* thirst to bring a Chatas* sacrifice" and you ask me about the nature of this thirst. It is, in fact, the thirst to attain Teshuvah*, that is, a particularly great closeness to Hashem*, as the commentary of the Rosh Korban* indicates, in allusion. You will also see the Rambam*, Laws of Teshuvah*, at chapter 7, and the meaning of the term "Chassidim*" in the commentary of Rashi* on tractate Sukkah* 53a.
