After a particularly long interruption, I have duly received your letter of 24 Iyar* and I read therein with pleasure that the Talmud Torah* is developing, that the number of students is increasing. No doubt the addition is also qualitative, so that the studies are intensifying. It is surely unnecessary to emphasize to you that, at all times, the study of our Torah* must, according to the expression of our Sages*, "lead to action," but how much more is this the case at the present time. This is so when "fear precedes wisdom," as the Mishnah* says, which includes the study that arouses the fear of Hashem*. Of course, this does not necessarily require a prolonged duration. Sometimes, a study connected to the fear of Hashem* lasting a few minutes exercises its effect on a student for a prolonged period. It can also consist of a few words that are pronounced with enthusiasm and warmth.

You make reference to a student who has non-Jewish friends. You ask me how to consider him. Very often, one can verify that, by finding him Jewish friends, one distances him from the others. Now, he is indeed among your students and there is therefore surely a way to ensure that they make a special effort to draw closer to him. In this way, he will no longer have free time to devote to the others, especially to those ones.

You also tell me that you have large debts, that your situation would be alleviated if you could establish a loan. You do not specify the minimum sum that would be necessary to come to your aid. In any case, it would be good, in this regard, to take counsel with the Chassidim* who are on the spot. I send you my blessing on the occasion of the festival and, according to the formula consecrated by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, to receive the Torah* with joy and depth, to convey good news of all the points about which you write to me,

N.B.: I send you, enclosed, a copy of my letter addressed to all, on the occasion of the annual meeting of the Chabad* women and girls. Its content applies throughout the year. It will surely interest you and, above all, it will interest your wife.

לאחרי הפסק הכי ארוך נתקבל מכתבו מכ"ד אייר, ונעם לי לקרות בו מהתפתחות התלמוד תורה ההוספה במספר התלמידים, ובודאי ישנה הוספה גם באיכות הוספה בהלימודים שלהם.

ובודאי למותר לעוררו אשר בכל הזמנים צריך הי' להיות לימוד תורתנו בלשון חז"ל תלמוד המביא לידי מעשה, ועאכו"כ בתקופתנו זו, וזה בא (בסגנון המשנה) כשיראתו, הלימוד בעניני יר"ש, קודמת לחכמתו. מובן שאין הכוונה לכמות הזמן, כי לפעמים רואים כי לימוד אפילו של רגעים אחדים בענין של יראת שמים (או גם לא לימוד אלא דברים אחדים הנאמרים בחום ובהתלהבות (היציק)) משפיע על התלמיד למשך כמה וכמה זמן.

במ"ש אודות תלמיד אשר יש לו חבורה אינה יהודית, ואיך להתייחס לזה.

הנה ברוב הפעמים רואים אשר אם ממציאים להאמור חברים יהודים, הרי בדרך ממילא מרחיקו זה מחברים כהנ"ל, והרי כיון שהוא בין תלמידיו, בטח ישנה אפשרית להשתדל ששאר התלמידים יתקרבו אליו יותר ויותר ובמילא לא יהי' זמנו פנוי לחברים אחרים ולהנ"ל בפרט.

במ"ש אודות החובות שיש לו לפרוע ושבאם הי' יכול ללות סכום, הי' זה מקיל עליו - הנה אינו מפרט המינימום של הסכום שיכול לעזור לו. ובכל אופן מהנכון שיתייעץ עם אנ"ש שעל אתר בהנוגע להאמור.
