By the grace of Hashem*,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, devotes himself to communal needs, of many accomplishments, Rav Avraham (note 1: Rav A. Feldman, of New Haven),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I have learned with pleasure, through this man and this woman (note 2: Who had presumably come to see the Rebbe*), of your achievements aimed at strengthening Judaism and spreading it in your community, in your study house, your synagogue and, as the dominant and profound point, in the domain of good education. If, in every place and at all times, such action has been fundamental in Israel, how much more so is it in the present era of many events, when confusion of minds prevails, and in this country, in the United States, where the youth possess a positive element and a profound quality, integrity and faith. But, due to our many sins, certain circles have used these qualities, in recent years, in a direction opposite to the path of the Torah* and the mitzvos*. I was satisfied to learn, through their intermediary, that Hashem* has granted you the merit and the success of observing the fruit of your efforts. Indeed, your action and your commitment are crowned with success and many members of your community are grateful to you for it.

May Hashem* grant that you redouble your ardor in our holy Torah*, Torah* of life, and its mitzvos*. As our Sages* say, "he who possesses one hundred coins desires two hundred." The success of your enterprise will therefore awaken in you the desire and the enthusiasm to obtain much more considerable achievements. On this occasion, I would like to remind you of what you are surely aware of, that is, the necessity of fixing a time also for the study of the profound part of the Torah*, which, in our era, has been revealed through the teaching of Chassidus*. This infuses vitality and enthusiasm into the Jew who studies the Torah* and practices the mitzvos*. How much more must this be so for one who exercises his influence on many other Jews. Every personal addition on his part to this vitality and enthusiasm will therefore be multiplied many times among those who receive his influence.

To pass from the community to the individual, I sensed in these people (note 3: The man and the woman mentioned at the beginning of the letter) the positive effect of the encouragement and the comfort that they receive from you, orally or through action, when you comfort them. I hope that, very soon, their situation will improve in various respects. Nevertheless, you will continue to comfort and encourage them. You know what trials they have had to overcome with their family, in the domain of Judaism. Moreover, they have had and they still exercise a positive influence on their surroundings, in order to bring them closer to the Divine Presence. With my respects and my blessing to convey good news of all this,

שלום וברכה!

נעם לי להודע ממר ומרת... שיחיו מפעולותיו להחזקת היהדות והפצתה בקהלתו בבית המדרש ובית הכנסת ובנקודה התיכונה והפנימית בשטח חינוך הכשר.

אשר אם בכל המקומות ובכל הזמנים דבר חיוני הי' זה בישראל עאכו"כ בתקופתנו זו רבת המאורעות ובלבול המוחין ובמדינה זו דארצוה"ב אשר דבר טוב ותכונה פנימית נמצא בהנוער, תמימות ואמונה, אלא שבעוה"ר בשנים שעברו, היו איזה חוגים שנצלו תכונות אלו בכיוון ההיפך מדרך התורה והמצוה, ושמחתי להודע מהנ"ל אשר זיכהו השי"ת והצליחו לראות פרי טוב בעמלו, הצלחת עבודתו ותעמולתו, ואשר כמה מבני הקהלה מיקרים אותו עבור זה.

ויהי רצון אשר יוסיף חילים לתוה"ק תורת חיים ומצותי' וע"ד מאמר חז"ל מי שיש לו מנה רוצה מאתים, הצלחה בעבודתו תעורר בו חשק והתלהבות להישגים גדולים יותר.

בהזדמנות זו אעוררו, אף שבודאי ידוע לו מכבר בהנוגע לקביעות עתים גם בפנימיות התורה אשר בדורותינו נתגלתה בתורת החסידות שהיא הנותנת חיות והתלהבות לאיש הישראלי בלימוד התורה וקיום המצות, ובפרט זה שיש לו השפעה על כו"כ מבני ישראל הרי כל הוספה בעצמו בעניני חיות והתלהבות, נכפלת פי כמה ע"י ההוספה שבאה במושפעיו כתוצאה מזה.

ומענין דרבים לענין דיחיד, הרגשתי בהנ"ל עד כמה פועלים עליהם לטובה העדוד רוח וההתחזקות שמקבלים ממנו אם בדבור אם בפעולות לעודד רוחם הנכאה, אף שתקותי שבקרוב יתחיל מזלם לעלות הטבה למצבם באיזה פרטים, בכל זה ודאי ימשיך לחזקם ולעודדם, והלא ידוע גם לו הנסיונות ביהדות שעמדו בהם הנ"ל ומשפחתם ולא עוד אלא שהשפיעו ומשפיעים גם על הסביבה בה נמצאים לקרבם תחת כנפי השכינה.
