Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6271 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 17 · Letter 126 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem*,
24 Iyar* 5718,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, of virtuous conduct and many accomplishments, Rav Levi (note 1: Rav L. Bilitski, of Brooklyn), shlita*,
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I received, with pleasure, your letter announcing the mitzvah* celebration organized by the association for the Talmud* and the Mishnah*, on the occasion of the conclusion of the study of the Mishnah* and its recommencement. May Hashem* grant that you redouble your ardor for our holy Torah*, Torah* of life, an expression that must not be separated from its simple meaning, since we live in this world, although it is material and coarse, and that you have an existence conforming to the teachings of the Torah*. And it is in this regard that it is said: "You are attached to Hashem* your Elokim*, all living today."
The conclusion of the Mishnah* alludes to this: "The Holy One, blessed be He, found no other receptacle containing blessing for Israel but peace" — peace between the soul and the body, and within the soul itself, between the animal soul and "the second soul of Israel" (note 2: According to the terms of the beginning of the second chapter of the Tanya*), the divine soul, as the holy Tanya* explains at length. Thereupon, peace and unity are revealed in the world as well.
One finds, at the beginning of the Mishnah*, an allusion to all of this: "From when does one read the Shema Yisrael* of the evening?" Thus, even if it is dark in the world, the Jews say: "Hear... Hashem* is One," and our Sages* explain: "Do not read: 'he called' (note 3: The verb Likro, in Hebrew, means both 'to read' and 'to call'), but 'he made others call'" (note 4: Avraham made others call upon the Name of Hashem*). One can thus "proclaim His Kingship on high, below, and at the four cardinal points." The word "One" alludes to unity in space and the same applies to unity in time, introduced by the Name of Hashem*, Havayah*, a contraction of Hayah, Hoveh, Yihyeh — "He was, He is, He will be." For, such is the meaning of this Name, as the Halachah* rules in the Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, at chapter 5. I send you my respects and I greet the participants in the study of the Mishnah*. According to the terms of our master, my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, I grant you my blessing to soon receive (note 5: On the festival of Shavuos*) the Torah* with joy and depth,
