Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6270 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 17 · Letter 125 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem*,

24 Iyar* 5718,

Brooklyn,

To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Nissan (note 1: Rav N. Telushkin, of Brooklyn. See, on his subject, Letter no. 6159),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I received, with pleasure, your letter of 22 Iyar*, relating to the visit you made to the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*, in the company of the great Rav*, distinguished man who fears Hashem*, Rav Chaim Bick, and to the results of the examinations that you administered, which were satisfactory. The material condition of the students depends on their spirituality. Now, it is said, regarding material goods, that: "he who has one hundred coins desires two hundred, and he who possesses two hundred wants four hundred." The more these students develop their knowledge and their ardor, the more they will strengthen their thirst and their constancy in the study of the complete Torah* of Hashem*, both its revealed part and its profound teaching, permeated with Chassidic* light and vitality. May Hashem* grant that these students conform to the will and the intention of our masters, founders of the Yeshivah*, who direct it. For, the words of the righteous and all the more so their deeds (note 2: In this case, that of having founded the Yeshivah*) are immutable and they always exercise their effect.

I thank you once more, as well as your friend, for this good news and, above all, for having, through this examination, established competition among the students, of which it is said that it multiplies wisdom. According to the Zohar*, volume 2, at page 126b, "one broadly reveals wisdom," which the Tzemach Tzedek* explains according to tractate Shabbos* 152b, which states: "the one who is jealous wastes away." This idea evokes the image of that worm of the domain of holiness that causes the cedar to waste away, that is, the emotions of the animal soul. The Orchos Tzaddikim*, at gate 14, regarding the teaching of our Sages* previously cited, "competition among the scholars multiplies wisdom," explains: "When one sees someone who studies... The same applies to all the mitzvos*..." and it also cites tractate Sotah* 3a. You will also see the Or HaTorah*, at Parshas* Vayetzei*, in the Chassidic* discourse entitled: "Rachel was jealous of her sister." With my blessing to convey good news, and "there is no good but Torah*" and its mitzvos*, in joy and enthusiasm,
