Volume 17 · Letter 120 · To: dirigeants des jeunes de l’association ‘Habad

By the grace of Hashem*,

22 Iyar* 5718,

Brooklyn,

To the directors of the youth of the Chabad* association in Tel Aviv, may Hashem* grant you long life,

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I have duly received your activity report for the month of Nissan*, whose conciseness seems to indicate that the continuation will reach me later. Likewise, I have had the occasion, these days, to consult your report and your assessment of the past weeks and months. One can rightly say in this regard, to use the formulation of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, that it is a very fine plowing and a very honest planting. Your sacred mission has been continuing for several years already and you have surely preserved the reports and assessments. It would therefore be judicious to devote a specific meeting to a synthesis, at least a general one, of everything that has been accomplished in the past, especially in order to deduce what must be done in the future. The central point is that the plowing and the planting must produce fruits and a harvest, enable them to be picked and reaped (note 1: The action in the future must enable one to draw benefit from what has been accomplished in the past). In other words, you will determine how to pursue the action so that the Chassidic* gatherings have an impact on those who participate in them, including during the days that follow them, and so that contact is maintained with them after these gatherings. This is self-evident.

There is also another point in this matter and I am surprised that no Chassid* has raised it. There are, at present, several tourists who travel to the Holy Land, coming from different countries. This is a unique opportunity to carry out action in all these countries while remaining in the Holy Land. For this, one must take advantage of every day, of every occasion that presents itself, to make known and to communicate what concerns Chabad* and its wellsprings (note 2: Of Chassidus*). Of course, not all people are identical, in what they receive and in the manner of guiding them. One must therefore adopt the manner of acting that corresponds to each individual. Nevertheless, every person can be contacted and reflection must enable one to determine the manner of doing so.

In general, it is difficult to determine, from here, the slightest detail of such an action. And, in fact, this is of no interest. Moreover, such an attitude can even be harmful, for our Sages* say: "A man prefers one measure of his own rather than nine measures of his friend's" (note 3: It is therefore preferable that the responsible parties concerned determine these details themselves). If you establish a program in this matter, the action carried out will be more pleasant and much more fruitful. I am sending you this letter by express, for, in my view, there is a particular urgency in this matter. Yet, to my astonishment and my sorrow, no one alludes to any of this in the letters I receive from the Chassidim*. And this concerns the influence exerted not only on distant countries, but also on these tourists personally. As in every other domain, it is here necessary to take broad precautions in order to avert "the pot belonging to several partners" (note 4: The dissolution of responsibilities, each one relying on the other), which is particularly harmful, since each one can say: "Let my innards rejoice" (note 5: Congratulating himself for what he has accomplished and attributing the failures to others), think that he himself is associated with the action and, simultaneously, tell himself that the other partner must do everything, that nothing is expected of him.

May Hashem* grant that you know success in your sacred mission, consisting of making Eretz Yisrael* the Holy Land, in an evident manner, as it is said: "For the Torah* emanates from Zion" and it is indeed a question here of "Torah*." For, according to the well-known expression of our Sages*, in the Midrash Eichah Rabbah*, chapter 2, paragraph 13: "If you are told that the nations possess wisdom, believe it; if you are told that they possess Torah*, do not believe it." There is indeed here a particularity of the people of Israel, to the exclusion of the other nations of the world, in the literal sense, but also of the non-Jew found within each Jew, as the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Devarim*, at page 90d, emphasizes.

The mission that has just been defined can apply, in various ways, to daily life and contribute to this purpose. Of course, one must take advantage of the festivals and the days of Chassidic* gatherings. I am not writing specifically to the other Chassidim* and to the various groups (note 6: Of the youth of the Chabad* association). You will surely find the means to transmit this message to them, to send them a copy of this letter or to organize a meeting. With my blessing to convey good and detailed news of all this,

ויה"ר שיצליחו בעבודתם בקדש לעשות את ארץ ישראל ארץ הקדושה גם בגלוי ובאופן האמור כי מציון תצא תורה וגו' ז.א. בדיוק הלשון תורה, וכמאמר הידוע (איכה רבה ב, יג) יש חכמה בגוים תאמין, יש תורה בגוים אל תאמין, כי זה מיוחד לעם ישראל, ושולל את עמי הארץ כפשוטו עד לשלול את הגוי אשר בתוך איש הישראלי (לקו"ת דברים צ, ד);
