Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6264 — Chinuch
Volume 17 · Letter 119
By the grace of Hashem*,
22 Iyar* 5718,
Brooklyn,
Shalom* u'vracha*,
A) I am responding to your letter from this Thursday evening, in which you ask me for counsel regarding what concerns you personally (note 1: On the manner of repairing the fault that was committed and of guarding against it in the future). In general, good counsel in this matter is given by the verse that clearly states: "I have placed Hashem* always before me." Moreover, our master the Ramah*, halachic* authority of Israel in the final instance, made these words the beginning of the four parts of the Shulchan Aruch*, in order to emphasize that they are the commencement and the foundation of the accomplishment of the Torah*.
You will therefore study the holy Tanya*, from the beginning of chapter 41 up to the following page, at the word: "the King" (note 2: See Letter no. 6259). From time to time, when you are at home or walking on the way, you will recite this text, orally or at least in thought. When you become accustomed to the idea that "Hashem* stands before him," as this passage of the Tanya* explains, you will immediately refine not only your soul, but also your body. Likewise, it would be good for you to learn by heart several chapters of Mishnah* and at least one chapter of Tanya*. Every weekday, before the prayer, you will give a few coins to tzedakah*. After the prayer, every day as well, including Shabbos* and the festivals, you will read the Tehillim* according to their monthly division. All of this will favor your study, in general, and what concerns the Torah* and the mitzvos*, in particular. And our Sages* say that: "they come to the aid of the one who desires to purify himself."
B) You also solicit my counsel in order to know success in the study of the Torah*. It has already been said, on this subject, that: "he who tells you that he has made efforts without being crowned with success, do not believe him." This means that everything depends on you and that you have received the strength for this. The more you strengthen your fear of Hashem* and intensify your study of the Torah*, the more His blessing will broaden in this regard. For, the Mishnah* says: "in one whose fear of Hashem* precedes his wisdom, his wisdom endures." With my blessing to convey good news,
