I am responding to your letter from this Friday in which you pose the following questions:

A) How to achieve praying with fervor?

One must meditate before the prayer, at least for a few moments, thinking about Whom one is about to address. It would also be good to learn by heart the beginning of chapter 41 of the Tanya*, up to "the King," on the following page. Before praying, you will repeat its content, orally or in thought. Likewise, on weekdays, before praying, you will give a few coins to tzedakah*.

B) How to study the Torah* and do so with constancy?

The same reflection is also effective for the study of the Torah* and the essential point, in these two domains, is the idea that the Torah*, the prayer, all the mitzvos* were given for the good of man and that in them reside his happiness, physical and moral.

C) You surely know what various works of our Sages* and our great ones say, according to which the fervor of prayer is favored by the use of a Siddur* and the study of the Torah*, by pronouncing the words orally and not solely in thought. You surely know the practice that consists of saying each day, after the morning prayer, Tehillim* according to their monthly division. You yourself maintain this practice or, at the very least, you will adopt it in the future. With my blessing to convey good news,

במענה למכתבו מיום הששי, בו שואל:

א)מהי העצה לכוונה בתפלה.

ההתבוננות לפני התפלה עכ"פ איזה רגעים לפני מי הוא הולך להתפלל. ומהנכון שילמוד ג"כ בעל פה מהתחלת ריש פרק מ"א בתניא עד תיבת המלך (ע"ב), ולפני התפלה יחזור על זה בדבור או במחשבה בתוכן הדבר. וכן בימות החול קודם התפלה יפריש איזה פרוטות לצדקה.

ב) מהי העצה ללימוד התורה ולהתמדה בזה.

ההתבוננות האמורה מועילה גם בנוגע ללימוד התורה והעיקר בשני הענינים הוא הרעיון אשר התורה והתפלה וכל המצות ניתנו לטובת האדם, ובזה צפון אשרו הן בגשמיות והן ברוחניות.

ג)בודאי יודע הכתוב בכמה מספרי חכמינו וגדולינו אשר לכוונת התפלה, מועיל תפלה מתוך הסידור, ובלימוד התורה צריך להוציא בפה, ז.א. בדבור לא רק במחשבה.

בודאי יודע מהתקנה לאמר בכל יום אחר תפלת הבקר השיעור תהלים חדשי - כפי שנחלק לימי החדש - ושומר על זה או שישמור עכ"פ מכאן ולהבא.
