Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6247 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 17 · Letter 102 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu

By the grace of Hashem*,

15 Iyar* 5718,

Brooklyn,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Rav Menachem (note 1: Rav M. Feldman, of Atlanta),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I am responding to your letter from this Monday, in which you raise the following points:

A) It seems that one of the synagogues of your city is currently constructing a new building for prayer. It is said that the plans for this construction include the absence of a separation (note 2: Between men and women. See, on this subject, Letter no. 5521) within the synagogue, so that it will be mixed. You ask me whether you should fight or do nothing. Indeed, some say that a fight could worsen the situation. You emphasize, however, that there is no final decision on this mixed seating. It is therefore clear that one cannot remain with crossed arms. Our Sages* say that in such a case, one must be cunning in one's fear. The goal is that there indeed be such a separation. Very often, this result is obtained when one ensures that the question is not resolved through a fight, but rather through informal intervention, by approaching all those who can influence the decision. One must be careful that they do not seek victory, which is a very damaging approach. Of course, the decision as to the appropriate manner of proceeding for this synagogue depends on the personality of its leaders, on the relationships they maintain with you and with those who are likely to convince them that a synagogue must be built in conformity with the will of the Creator.

It is lamentable and contrary to basic logic to pray and to request a favor from anyone while acting against the will of the one being implored. This is also the case regarding a person of flesh and blood. When someone formulates a request while immediately specifying that he will transgress his will — moreover, that he will do so in his house — but asks him, nevertheless, to grant this request, one who adopts such an attitude will be considered a fool. You say that, according to some, such a separation is merely a custom. You surely know that articles and brochures have been published, including in the English language, explaining what such a separation is and what precisely the prohibition is in this matter. You will be able to obtain them from the central rabbinical organizations of New York.

B) You allude to your state of health and to the pains you had previously. The doctor tells you that you must control yourself, free yourself from worries and tension. You know what the solution is so as not to worry. One must have trust in Hashem*. And, you will find a lengthy explanation on this subject in the Chovos HaLevavos*, in the "Gate of Trust." In fact, this is a direct consequence of the faith of the children of Israel, who are "believers, children of believers." Faith establishes that Hashem* bestows His Providence upon each person. He is the Essence of goodness and, according to the expression of our Sages*, "all that Hashem* does is for the good." Why then worry? This is possible only when one forgets the very principle of faith.

It should be noted that this applies to all that depends on Hashem*, for, our Sages* say, "everything is in the hands of Hashem*, except the fear of Hashem*." For all that concerns the Torah* and the mitzvos*, it is therefore incumbent upon the person to improve his behavior, in accordance with the purpose of creation, as affirmed by the terms of the Mishnah* according to which: "I was created to serve my Creator." Although you do not say so clearly, I hope that you have a fixed time to study the revealed part of the Torah* and Chassidus*, that you even regularly increase this time. Indeed, we have received the injunction to know only elevation in the domain of holiness. With my blessing to convey good news of all this,

P.S.: My secretary who writes in English is not here at the moment. This is the reason why my response is formulated in the Holy Tongue. Nevertheless, you may continue to write to me in English.
