Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6244 — Health
Volume 17 · Letter 99
By the grace of Hashem*,
14 Iyar* 5718,
Brooklyn,
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I have obtained news of you and of your way of life. Of course, I would be distressed if this news were verified. Indeed, I have been told that you multiply fasts, that the members of your family ask you insistently to consult a doctor regarding your state of health, but that you pay no heed to their words, that you do not comply with medical prescriptions, that you do not even wish to go to the doctor.
It is surely unnecessary to insist on the fact that we have received the following injunction: "You shall take great care of your souls," or to comment on the words of the great master, the Rambam*, in his work Yad HaChazakah*, Laws of Dispositions, according to which one cannot understand and have an intellectual activity when one is hungry and sick. One must indeed have a whole body to serve Hashem*. You will consult, on this subject, the end of chapter 3 and the beginning of chapter 4 of those laws. For all that concerns health, "the Torah* has authorized the physician to heal," and several laws are decided in this sense in the Shulchan Aruch*, Laws of Shabbos* and Laws of Yom Kippur*. Regarding fasts more specifically, the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and halachic* authority of the hidden part of the Torah*, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and halachic* authority of the revealed part of the Torah*, rules that in our generations, the multiplication of fasts can cause illness or weakness, Hashem* forbid. Such a practice is therefore forbidden, and you will consult, on this subject, the dreadful words appearing in Iggeres HaTeshuvah*, by the same author, in chapter 3.
I hope that these few lines will suffice for you to modify your behavior in the appropriate manner. You will consult a doctor and you will comply with his prescriptions, down to the smallest detail. May Hashem* strengthen your state of health and may you be able to give me good news of all that concerns you. With my blessing to convey good news,
