Volume 17 · Letter 91

By the grace of Hashem*,

10 Iyar* 5718,

Brooklyn,

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I am responding to your letter from the conclusion of Shabbos*, responding to the question that I asked you regarding your engagement. You list the various points that have prevented you from doing so until now (note 1: The recipient of this letter was apparently not in the first bloom of youth and already had children from a previous marriage). Now, our Torah*, Torah* of life, says: "It is not good for man to be alone" and "do not rest your hands in the evening" (note 2: An advanced age must not be synonymous with a cessation of activity). The Halachah* is decided in this sense, in the Shulchan Aruch*, at the beginning of Even HaEzer*. Certainly, one must find a solution to the point you raise and avert the risks. However, experience has shown, in the recent past, that many people in your situation became engaged, then married, are very satisfied, and have a happy life. You fear that this will cause your children to distance themselves. I am very doubtful about this. On the contrary, I think that they desire it as well. You ask me about the three festivals (note 3: That must elapse before his remarriage). Now, when you begin to take an interest in proposals in this area, you will need time to find and discuss all the details. In the meantime, these three festivals will pass. It will not be the same if you do not begin to take an interest in all this right now.

You ask me whether you should distribute your assets (note 4: Among his children and to tzedakah*, as if it were an inheritance). It seems judicious that you yourself give what you wish to entrust to tzedakah*, in accordance with the affirmation of our Torah* according to which "it is preferable to act oneself rather than to delegate to an emissary." You will also consult the discourse of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, based on the statement: "You shall observe the World to Come in your lifetime" (note 5: See the letters of the Frierdiker Rebbe*, Letters no. 2156 and 2335). Conversely, your plan to give immediately what should be the inheritance you will leave after a long life does not suit me. In our era, it has been verified that such behavior has had unfortunate effects. Hashem* feeds and sustains each one, with goodness, grace, benevolence, and mercy. He will therefore positively satisfy all the needs of those whom you wish to include in this distribution. Thus, for long days and good years to come, these assets will be put in the service of the Torah* and its mitzvos*. With my blessing to convey good news of all this,
