By the grace of Hashem*,

9 Iyar* 5718,

Brooklyn,

Blessings and greetings,

I am responding to your letter of 28 Nissan*, in which you describe the situation of your city regarding enrollments for the next school year and, in particular, the possibility of opening a Chabad* school there. As you know, the way of Chabad*, in general, is not that of fear. However, neither is it its place to waste strength and energy fighting against politicians, whatever party they belong to, when these could usefully be invested in important areas for which one is directly responsible. It is clear that in this matter as well, it is the majority concern that must be taken into account. This means that if the Chassidim* have the choice between an action conducted in a place where they will not be disturbed, where the number of children is large, with other advantages as well, or else another place, where they will find only half or a third of these children, and only at the cost of a struggle, you yourself will agree that it is in the first place that they must conduct their action.

I add that if "the guardian of the pit is designated by heaven," how much more is this the case for a Rav*, who decides the Halachah* for a Jewish community. Now, "the Holy One, blessed be He, does not act with treachery toward His creatures," and He therefore grants from the outset the necessary strength and possibilities to truly carry out one's mission, that of spreading the fear of Hashem*, the love of Hashem*, the study of the Torah* permeated with this fear of Hashem*, and the practice of the mitzvos* in the best manner among the people of the place. Our Sages* tell us, in our Torah*, Torah* of life, in tractate Sanhedrin* 37a, that the scoundrels in the neighborhood of Rav Zeira, with all that concerns them, are indeed placed under his responsibility. And, you know the saying of the Alter Rebbe* according to which the "master of the place" truly holds everything that is found there.

As you ask me at the end of your letter, and "everything goes according to the conclusion," I will mention your name at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. I have good hope that a concrete action will result from it, for your community and, of course, for yourself. You will continue your elevation, from one stage to the next, in order to be a Chassid*, that is, to spread the luminary of Chassidus*, its light and its vitality in all that concerns the Torah* and the mitzvos*, a conduct based on the principle: "In all your ways, know Him," which includes three domains: on the one hand, that of the wrongs caused, the Prohibitions, "turn away from evil"; on the other hand, that of the Patriarchs, the middle line, the study of the Torah*, to which the Patriarchs devoted themselves permanently, which is moreover the only mitzvah* of the Torah* incumbent upon the father toward his son, according to the Laws of Torah* Study of the Alter Rebbe*, at the beginning of chapter 1, and the Piskei Dinim* of the Tzemach Tzedek* on the Laws of Torah* Study of the Rambam*; and finally, that of the blessings and what follows them, the Commandments, "do good," the revelation of light and influence in the worlds and in the soul, according to the beginning of the first chapter of Iggeres HaTeshuvah*.

I send you my blessing to convey good news of all this. The central point is therefore to make your place a sanctuary for Hashem*. Chassidus* explains that a king of flesh and blood resides in his dwelling with the entire essence of his person, with his profound nature and with all that concerns him. The same therefore applies to the house that the Holy One, blessed be He, King of the world, desires to possess here below. With my respects and my esteem,
