Blessings and greetings,

I am responding to your letter of 1 Iyar*, in which you specify the matches that have been proposed to you. The first attracts you, but you were advised to draw lots and the lot designated the second. Now, when it is a matter of engagement and both young people fear Hashem*, it is the attraction that must prevail, as it is said: "Let us consult her." I have never heard of drawing lots in such a case.

However, your letter seems to indicate that your father leans toward the second proposal. You must therefore investigate the reason for this and examine once more these two proposals in the light of what this investigation will have determined. Sometimes, it is difficult to make a decision about something so crucial in one's existence. It would therefore be judicious to receive the advice of those who are aware of all the details. במענה למכתבה מא' אייר, בו כותבת ע"ד הצעות נכבדות שלאחת מהן יש לה המשכת הלב יותר ובהנוגע להשני' אמרו לה שהטיל גורל והגורל הורה להצעה השני'.

הנה בכלל בעניני שידוכין, כשבשתי הצעות המדובר הוא ירא שמים, יש מקום להכרעת המשכת הלב - וכמ"ש ונשאלה את פי', ולא שמעתי בענינים כאלו ע"ד הטלת גורל.

אבל כיון שכנראה ממכתבה, אבי' שי' נוטה להצעה השני' יש לה לברר טעמו ונמוקו בזה, ובהתאם להבירור לדון עוד הפעם על דבר שתי ההצעות.

וכיון שלפעמים קשה הלחליט בענין שנוגע כל כך בחיים, כדאי שתתייעץ בזה עם אלו המכירים פרטי הדברים.
