Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6229 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 17 · Letter 84
By the grace of Hashem*,
8 Iyar* 5718,
Brooklyn,
Shalom* u'vracha*,
We are in the period of the Omer* and Chassidus* emphasizes (note 1: See, on this subject, Letter no. 6268) that one does not count it with ordinal numbers — "today is the first day," "the second day" — but rather with cardinal numbers — "one day," "two days" — which means that the divine service of the previous day, even if it reached fullness, now accesses an additional dimension, in relation to what was accomplished.
May Hashem* grant that each one of us, within all of Israel, become aware that this concerns them personally and does not apply only to others. And, this demand is like the scythe for the harvest (note 2: It demands a concrete action, a struggle and an effort). According to the terms of the Likkutei Torah*, on Parshas* Bamidbar, page 15d, "within the body, innate feelings are naturally strong. One must therefore bend them and curve them, remove the evil from them, then transform it, raise the scythe against them, cut them, make them disappear, and reduce them to nothing, until they submit and are included within the good feelings." You will consult this text. And, this explanation is given within a discourse that explains, beforehand, the giving of the Torah*, the Ten Commandments, all that we received directly from Hashem*. You will also see those commentaries.
Nevertheless, "our inheritance is beautiful," and this form of divine service is, at the present time, easier to carry out than it was the first time. This can be compared to the explanation according to which the Matzah* that we eat after the giving of the Torah*, during the first half of the night (note 3: Of the Pesach* Seder*), is more elevated than that which was consumed, at the same moment, before the revelation of Sinai. One can apply the same comparison to the period that preceded the revelation of Chassidus* and to that which followed it, to conclude how one can transform and elevate one's feelings through the Chassidic* ways.
