Volume 17 · Letter 77

By the grace of Hashem*,

5 Iyar* 5718,

Brooklyn,

To Mr. Moshe Yeari (note 1: See, on his subject, Letter no. 5802),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I have duly received your letter of the second day of Iyar* and I have learned from it, with pleasure, of your joy and that of the members of your family, on the occasion of the Bar Mitzvah* of your son Yosef, to whom Hashem* will grant long life. May Hashem* grant that he accept the yoke of the Torah*, that of the mitzvos*, and, as the foundation of all this, that of the heavenly Kingship. Our Sages* emphasize that an approach conducted in this order is enduring, for, according to the terms of the Mishnah*, "one will first accept the yoke of the heavenly Kingship, then that of the mitzvos*." Now, the formulation of the Mishnah* is particularly precise and it underscores, in this case, that one practices the mitzvos* as if one were bearing a yoke (note 2: Through submission). In fact, the children of Israel received the Torah*, the first time (note 3: Since the giving of the Torah* is permanent, as it is said: "Blessed are You, Hashem*, Who gives the Torah*" — in the present tense), by proclaiming: "We will do and then we will understand." Despite this, one has no certainty (note 4: That one has truly received the Torah*) as long as one does not put forward the yoke of divine Kingship, that is, as long as one does not submit oneself globally, like a servant before his king, in an evident manner, with full and entire submission. In such a case, the acceptance of the Kingship of Hashem* can be maintained in every particular detail, in every specific mitzvah*.

Divine Providence has granted you the merit of a life in which you exercise an influence on the education of the young. The fate of tens, of hundreds of them is in your hands. You must therefore guide them on the path of goodness and uprightness, on the royal way, that of the King, King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He, as He has taught us in our Torah*, Torah* of truth and Torah* of life. The Holy One, blessed be He, acts "measure for measure" (note 5: In the manner in which one acts toward Him), but in greatly increased proportion. He will therefore grant you His positive recompense and you will derive from this child, as will your wife and the entire family, much genuine satisfaction, a traditional Jewish satisfaction. I send you my respects and my blessing of Mazal Tov*, on the occasion of the Bar Mitzvah*, as well as my blessing of success for your own service of Hashem*, concordant with that of all the sons and daughters of Israel and bringing closer, on a daily basis, their heart to our Father Who is in heaven. Awaiting your good news,
