Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6213 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 17 · Letter 68
By the grace of Hashem*,
2 Iyar* 5718,
Brooklyn,
To the Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and carries out a divine mission, Rav Yaakov Eliezer (note 1: Rav Y. E. Herzog, of Melbourne, Australia. See, on his subject, Letter no. 5837),
Shalom* u'vracha*,
After a particularly long interruption, I have duly received your letter of 25 Nissan*. You tell me that important and considerable work is needed with the Yeshivah* students here and you explain the reasons. To someone like you, it is surely unnecessary to explain at length that it is the same for all Yeshivah* students, in whatever place they may be, and that it was already so in the earliest generations. This is, moreover, the reason why one speaks, in this regard (note 2: Regarding the teaching delivered to students), of a "divine mission." Our Sages* have emphasized that there is indeed an immense responsibility in this, which requires a permanent effort. And, you will consult, on this subject, among other sources, tractate Baba Basra* 8b, the Laws of Torah* Study in the Shulchan Aruch* and also those of the Alter Rebbe*. Similarly, you tell me that the Chassidim* should meet more often. This is, of course, very judicious, especially according to what is explained in the Kuntres HaChaltzu* (note 3: Of the Rebbe Rashab*, dealing with the importance of loving one's fellow). But, for such initiatives to be enduring, they must be decided on the spot and not ordered from elsewhere (note 4: In this case, by the Rebbe*).
You speak of teaching the students the tractate Sotah*. I am surprised by such a plan, for the opinions are not unanimous on the matter. Therefore, why embark on this path? Moreover, for classes at the level of those you describe, several other tractates have always been taught in the Yeshivos*. Why change the established order? Furthermore, you base your reasoning (note 5: Presumably regarding the adjustments made in prayer, which Rav Herzog refused, basing himself on the fact that this was a claim of the Haskalah* movement) on the Kuntres Tenu'as HaHaskalah*. Now, it is indeed omissions (note 6: In prayer, for example due to lateness) that are at issue here, and moreover, the fact of not excluding the principle. This is self-evident. You also bring up the reading of Hallel* before the prayer (note 7: For example, for one who would arrive at the synagogue at that point). Concretely, I have not received a precise instruction on this subject, but the Chassidim* relate the following. Our masters prayed at length on Shabbos*, sometimes even several hours after the end of the service. During the festivals, however, they made sure to finish the morning prayer with the congregation and to read the Hallel* with it. I send you my blessing of success in your sacred mission of spreading the wellsprings (note 8: Of Chassidus*), through an appropriate education, and also in your personal concerns.
Furthermore, you have my blessing to convey good news of all this, to carry out your mission within Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak* (note 9: The Lubavitch schools of Australia), without being affected by attempts to oppose you in this, whatever their origin and the reason put forth. Indeed, you know what their real source is. On the contrary, these provocations should spur you to redouble your ardor, joy, and enthusiasm in this sacred mission,
