By the grace of Hashem*,

1 Iyar* 5718,

Brooklyn,

To the Rav*, Chassid* and righteous man, of illustrious lineage, Rav Shalom (note 1: Rav Sh. Sufrin, Rabbi of Komarno. See, on his subject, Letter no. 6180),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I am responding to your letter of 25 Nissan*. I have learned, with pleasure, that your son has begun to put on Tefillin* and I enclose the letter that I am addressing to him, in accordance with your suggestion (note 2: This is the following letter). Of course, he did well to begin wearing the Tefillin* now, for we clearly heard from my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, that all must do so from two months before the Bar Mitzvah*, as stated in the Hayom Yom*, on the date of 2 Menachem Av*. And, it is clearly specified that this custom is addressed to all, for in the Rebbe's* house, one began well before that. Thus, my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, explained that he himself began to wear them from the age of twelve.

I am not unaware of the opinion of some among the later halachic* authorities, who are cited by the commentators of the Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, end of chapter 37. According to them, one does not put on Tefillin* earlier than prescribed, for they require a pure body. And, how much more so in our era. But, in any event, this teaching was clearly given and it is a mitzvah* to adhere to the words of the most recent Sages*, all the more so since they asked for their ruling to be publicized and specified that it applies to all.

It seems to me that one can explain this teaching in the following manner. It is an effort, an initiative introduced to spread Chassidus* to the widest circles, without fixing preconditions, even if in the earliest generations, before the revelation of the Baal Shem Tov*, of his disciple the Maggid* (note 3: Of Mezeritch) and of his own disciples, among whom was the Alter Rebbe*, one did indeed endeavor to do so (note 4: To fix conditions making these customs accessible only to those who possess moral elevation). And, you know the parable that the Alter Rebbe* states (note 5: See HaTamim, volume 2, page 49, and Letter no. 5000) on this subject, that of the precious jewel from the King's crown. When His only son was ill and exposed to grave danger, Hashem* forbid, this King, without the slightest certainty as to the final outcome, ordered that the jewel be removed from His crown and that it be used to heal the child. According to the well-known expression, it is justified to pour a large quantity of it outward if one can hope that, in this way, the prince will receive a few drops and be healed. You must understand the meaning of this parable.

In recent years, one can verify, in practice, that the spreading of Chassidus* has saved many people from the trials and obstacles to which they were exposed. All of this is well known to those who were in Russia and overcame such trials there. At a propitious moment, I will mention all those you cite at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. May Hashem* grant that you convey good news of all that you mention in your letter. With my respects and my blessing to convey good news,
