Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6203 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 17 · Letter 58
By the grace of Hashem*,
First day of Rosh Chodesh* Iyar* 5718,
Brooklyn,
Shalom* u'vracha*,
The response to your letter concerning your son, which reached me with a delay far beyond the usual, will be read, at a propitious moment, at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, so that you may obtain the satisfaction of your needs and especially that his state of health (note 1: That of the son) may improve rapidly.
You tell me that you are consulting a doctor and I am surprised, for you specify that he is not a specialist in his condition, but that he deals with diseases of the internal organs. Certainly, it is said that "salvation comes from many counselors," but it is quite evident that the essential counselor must be one who is a specialist in the matter. Now, there are many of them in the Holy Land, and if one must proceed in this manner for an ordinary treatment, how much more must it be so when it comes to a new medication. In such a case, it is always necessary to be prudent, as practice confirms.
Of course, if the specialist physician prescribes a treatment based on medications that are available in the United States, one will endeavor to send them from here, provided that this doctor writes their names precisely, in accordance with medical terminology and in Latin letters, with all the necessary information on the subject. Thus, you speak, in your letter, of tablets. Now, several medications are packaged in tablets of different sizes. You will therefore inform the doctor that you are sending these details abroad, and he will surely know how to write them. The suggestion to reduce his study for some time and to assign him a physical activity or, at the very least, an office job during this period is judicious. If he refuses this work, as you say in your letter, one must ask whether the time has not come to put into practice the terms of the verse: "When it is necessary to act for Hashem*, they annul Your Torah*," as the great master, the Rambam*, also affirms in his Laws of Dispositions, at the end of chapter 3 and at the beginning of chapter 4.
Your letter indicates that you devote yourself to the moral healing (note 2: The teaching of Torah*) of "your children," that is, of students. Now, you know that the Holy One, blessed be He, acts "measure for measure" (note 3: In the manner in which one acts toward Him), but in greatly increased proportion. You will therefore obtain, as recompense, the healing of "your children," in the literal sense. Moreover, one can deduce from the words of the Rambam* that there also exist healthy souls and sick souls, just as for the body, according to the third of his Eight Chapters and his Laws of Dispositions, in chapter 2. To heal the body, some medications are bitter and others are sweet. The difference is quite evident, especially when the treatment is not taken all at once. In general terms, such is the difference that can be made between Mussar*, ethics, and Chassidus*. The former, as its name indicates, emphasizes the bad feelings, whereas the latter underscores the elevation and the value of this soul. It therefore tends to exclude everything that goes against this elevation.
Consequently, it would be particularly judicious for you to set a fixed time to study Chassidus*. I have good hope that, from time to time, you already consult its works. However, this is not a fixed study, especially according to the teaching of the Alter Rebbe* (note 4: See, on this subject, Letters no. 4371, 4937, 4993, 5763, 5820, 6273, 6305, 6310, 6418, and 6452), author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, according to whom such fixedness is not only in time, but also and especially in the soul. You will therefore take the same approach in your teaching to your students. Indeed, it is said of the Torah* that "her ways are pleasant ways." And, "nothing withstands the will," all the more so since, according to your expression, formulated in your letter, you have had the merit of hearing elevated talks delivered by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. With my respects and my blessing to convey good news of all this,
