Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6186 — Grief & Loss

By the grace of Hashem*,

13 Nissan* 5718,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Yitzchak (note 1: Rav Y. Alfassi),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I have received, with pleasure, your letter, as well as the book: "The Holy Grandfather" and the journal Machanayim, in which your article on the Aliyah* of the Chassidim* to Eretz Yisrael* and the Aliyah* of Chabad* is published. I thank you for having thought of sending them to me. You will no doubt also send your other works to my library, for the benefit of the greatest number.

May Hashem* grant that you use the capacities that divine Providence has entrusted to you in order to spread what pertains to Chassidus*, its teachings and its way of life, in ever wider circles. It is clear that the spread of Judaism in general is a necessity. It is, furthermore, the foundation and the framework for the spread of Chassidus*. And, you know the importance of a mitzvah* whose fulfillment cannot be entrusted to someone else, according to Tractate Moed Katan* 9a. In general, all the mitzvos* do not equal a single word of the Torah* and a mitzvah* whose practice cannot be entrusted to others counterbalances, by itself alone, the study of the Torah*, in the most extreme manner. Now, few are those who are qualified to spread Chassidus* and it is therefore indeed a "mitzvah* whose practice cannot be entrusted to others." One who has a specific aptitude in this matter must devote himself to it even before spreading Judaism as a whole. Furthermore, one mitzvah* draws another in its wake. It is therefore inconceivable that a Jew should absorb the words of Chassidus* without his world and his way of life ultimately being transformed regarding everything pertaining to Judaism, the Torah* of truth, and its mitzvos* (note 2: The spread of Chassidus* therefore indeed leads to that of Judaism as a whole).

On the occasion of the festival of Matzos*, which approaches, for us and for all Israel, in a positive manner, I herewith send you my blessing that it be kosher* and joyful, bringing you a genuine freedom, freedom from all worries, material and spiritual, from everything that obstructs a joyful and enthusiastic service of Hashem*. You will maintain this freedom and this joy throughout all the days of the year. With my respects and my blessing,

M. Schneerson,

As is my custom, I immediately leafed through your book. Following a rapid examination, I will make the following remarks:

At the beginning of the book, page 15: The passing of the Baal Shem Tov* was on a Wednesday, according to a discourse of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, of 20 Kislev* 5693 (note 3: 1932. Likkutei Dibburim*, volume 2, page 214). It was therefore on 6 Sivan*.

At the end, page 234: Regarding this wealthy man, you will consult the lengthy account in the discourse of Shemini Atzeres* 5696 (note 4: 1935, of the previous Rebbe*. Sefer HaSichos* 5696, page 29) and the saying of the Maggid of Mezeritch*, on this subject.
