I am responding to your letter of 3 Nissan*, in which you ask me the following questions:

A) You have devoted your time to the study of our holy Torah* and you therefore did not study the English language as you should have. You ask me whether this is judicious. You specify that you are seventeen years old. It is quite clear that it must be so. Our holy Torah* is called Torah* of life because it gives life not only in the world to come, but also in this world, which means that increased ardor and enthusiasm in its study, and "great is the study that leads to action," to the practice of the mitzvos*, constitute the best and most appropriate preparation for earning one's living, when the time comes. You will surely find the words to explain all of this to your parents.

B) In every domain, the help of Hashem* is necessary. It would therefore be judicious, every weekday, before the morning prayer, to set aside a few coins for tzedakah*. Each day as well, including during Shabbos* and the festivals, after the morning prayer, you will read Tehillim* according to their monthly division. It would be good to also maintain the well-known studies of Chumash* and Tanya*. I send you my blessing to convey good news, to study the Torah* with fear of Hashem*, to practice the mitzvos* in the best manner, and for a kosher* and joyful festival of Pesach*,

P.S.: Your second question concerned the fact that your name was changed some time ago. You ask me whether you should restore the previous one and I am surprised that you are considering this. Why change your current name, which is in the Holy Tongue?

במענה למכתבו מג' ניסן, בו שואל:

א) הקדיש זמנו ללמוד תוה"ק, ובמילא אין לומד כדבעי השפה האנגלית, ושואל אם נכון סדר זה, והוא בן י"ז שנה.

בודאי שנכון הדבר, והרי תורתנו הק' נקראת תורת חיים לא רק ע"ש החיים בעולם הבא אלא גם על החיים בעולם הזה, ז.א. שעל ידי תופסת התמדה ושקידה בלימוד התורה (וגדול תלמוד שמביא לידי מעשה, הוא קיום המצות) הרי זה הכנה הכי נכונה ומתאימה בחיים של פרנסה כשיבוא הזמן, ובודאי ימצא אותיות מתאימות איך להסביר הדבר להוריו שיחיו.

ב) כיון שלכל דבר צריכים סייעתא דשמיא, הנה מהנכון אשר בכל יום חול קודם תפלת הבקר יפריש איזה מטבע לצדקה, וכל יום גם בש"ק ויום טוב לאחרי תפלת הבקר, יאמר השיעור תהלים חדשי - כמו שנחלק התהלים לימי החדש - ומה טוב שישמור גם על שיעורי חומש ותניא הידועים.
