To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Yosef (note 1: Rav Y. Burg, leader of the National Religious Party. See, on his subject, Letter no. 5962),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I have received, in due time, your letter, which responded to my reaction concerning what happened during the celebration of 19 Kislev* at Kfar Chabad* (note 2: See, on this subject, Letter no. 5962). I must say that your explanations did not satisfy me. You say, to quote you, that "I am not among those who had the merit of growing up in a Chassidic* environment and I therefore did not feel an elevation of the soul." Yet this is precisely the purpose of the Torah* of Israel and of Jewish customs. In fact, a custom is an integral part of the Torah* and it must therefore, initially, be applied with submission. It is only subsequently that the revealed faculties of the soul function fully. According to the well-known expression, it is by putting into practice the principle: "We will do and (then) we will understand" that one effectively obtains "we will understand." In any event, it is useless to complain about the past. I hope that, in the future, such a discussion will be unnecessary, that your participation in Chassidic* farbrengens* will not be linked to any prior calculation.

On the occasion of the festival of Matzos*, the time of our freedom, which approaches, I send you my wishes for a genuine liberation from limits and barriers, from everything that obstructs, materially and spiritually. With my blessing for a kosher* and joyful festival of Pesach*,

בעתו קבלתי מכתבו מענה על תגובתי בהנוגע לחגיגת י"ט כסלו בכפר חב"ד, אף שמוכרחני לומר שההסברה במכתב כבודו לא השביעה רצוני, כיון שמיוסדת היא, כלשון מכתבו, על "היות ואין אני מאלה שזכו לגדול בסביבה של חסידים לא הרגשתי את עצמי באותה מעלה של הנפש כו'" שהרי זהו יסודם של כל עניני תורת ישראל ומנהגי ישראל, שמנהג ישראל תורה הוא, שבתחילה עלינו לקיימם מתוך קבלת עול, ואח"כ פועלים פעולתם גם בכוחות הנפש הגלוים, ובסגנון הידוע דהקדמת נעשה לונשמע, שסו"ס בא גם הנשמע.

אבל אין צועקין על העבר, ותקותי שלעתיד לא יהי' מקום לשקו"ט מעין זו וישתתף מבלי חשבון מקודם לזה בהתועדויות, ועל דרך הצחות דלא כמנהג סעודה סתם אשר יקירי ירושלים לא היו מסיבין בה כו'.

ולקראת חג המצות, זמן חירותנו, הממשמש ובא, הנני שולח לו איחולי לחירות אמתית ממצרים וגבולים ומכל ענינים המבלבלים, בין בגשם ובין ברוח.
