By the grace of Hashem*,
7 Nissan* 5718,
Brooklyn,
To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Rav Avraham Moshe (note 1: Rav A. M. Greenberg, of Bnei Brak. See, on his subject, Letters no. 4937, 6300, 6357, and 6488),
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I am responding to your letter of 2 Nissan*, the day of the Hillula* of the Rebbe Rashab*, whose merit protects us, as well as all Israel. You ask me about the expression that appears in various passages of the Tanya*, in books of Chassidus*, and, more generally, in the words of our Sages*: "the Patriarchs are the chariot," describing their submission to Hashem*, which is comparable to that of a chariot in relation to its driver. You are surprised by this because, in various books, this chariot is defined as the instrument through which Hashem* directs the world.
Now, I do not understand in what way these two assertions are contradictory. Quite the contrary, they complement each other. The Tanya* refers to the person, to his situation, to his service of Hashem*. In this regard, he must indeed be a chariot. The books you cite, on the other hand, speak of what results from this in the world. Thus, it is said that the Kohanim* are the emissaries charged with performing the Temple* service and the sacrifices offered by the children of Israel. This is what they accomplish in the world and, in particular, in the Temple*. Regarding their status and their position in this service of Hashem*, however, the Rambam* says clearly, at the end of the laws of Shemittah* and Jubilee, that the Levi'im* are "those who have a generous spirit, have understood that one must distinguish oneself and stand before Hashem*, and separate themselves from the behaviors of the world" (note 2: It is clear that this definition applies equally to a Kohen*, a Levi*, or a Yisrael*).
I hope that you set aside time to study Chassidus*, that you influence your surroundings to spread this study. Such is the need and the necessity of the moment, as Rabbi Chaim Vital* explains at length, in wondrous words, in his introduction (note 3: To Shaar HaHakdamos*. See the preceding letter). And, nothing can withstand the will. With my blessing for a kosher* and joyful festival of Pesach*,
On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,
the secretary,
