Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6164 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 17 · Letter 19
By the grace of Hashem*,
7 Nissan* 5718,
Brooklyn,
Blessings and greetings,
I am responding to your letter from the conclusion of Shabbos*, in which you briefly describe your life and your current family situation. You ask my opinion on the following points:
A) Your husband works at the electric company and, simultaneously, he is a contractor. Now, it is difficult for him to combine these two positions. He is therefore considering resigning from the electric company in order to devote himself to construction. In my opinion, the moment is not propitious for such a change. Furthermore, his work at the electric company surely gives him special entitlements, for example for retirement and for insurance. Nevertheless, a way must be found to lighten his workload. This will no doubt be easier in the domain of construction, by getting help or by spreading the projects and their development over a longer period.
B) Regarding the time your husband devotes to the study of the Torah*, it is quite evident that this is a necessity for every Jew. How much more is a specific blessing from the One Who creates the world and gives the Torah* necessary in order to make an addition in this domain as in all others. You write to me that he cannot find a study partner in your surroundings. Yet, if you search for one in the appropriate manner, you will no doubt find one or two people. Furthermore, if he studies with someone once or twice a week, he will then be able to do so alone on the other days. Indeed, the study of the Torah* is a daily necessity and, on Shabbos*, it must, moreover, be increased.
C) You tell me that the way of life of your eldest son, at present, is not appropriate, not because of his surroundings or through lack of interest in his future, but, more precisely, as you interpret it, because, in his view, he did not succeed in his studies in the past. You will surely find the words to explain to him that such a thought is forbidden. Indeed, the awareness of not succeeding leads him to the opposite of eagerness, to a deficiency regarding his establishment. Moreover, this feeling is unfounded. Indeed, the absence of success in a certain domain can in no way justify or cause discouragement, for one can very well obtain extraordinary success in other domains. Moreover, this lack of success may be explained by an incidental cause that does not depend on the person. The Creator of the world grants each person the strength and capacities necessary to have an organized life. Nevertheless, He has precisely commanded and taught us that: "Hashem* your Elokim* will bless you in all that you do." Of course, in order to make it easier for your son to embark on a straight and useful path, it would be good for him to join a religious kibbutz* as soon as possible. He fears that the discipline there will be too strict for him, but I am certain that this will be the case only during the first few days. Very quickly, the positive aspects will make him completely forget the difficulties of his arrival in that place.
It would be good for your husband to give a few coins to tzedakah* every weekday, before the morning prayer. You yourself will adopt the custom of virtuous Jewish women, which consists of giving tzedakah* before lighting the candles, on the eve of Shabbos* and the festivals. With my blessing to convey good news, for a kosher* and joyful festival of Pesach*,
