Blessings and greetings (note 1: This letter is addressed to a woman),

After a long silence, your letter of 2 Nissan* reached me and it does not clearly establish the reason why you did not send news during this entire period. You make reference to the environment in which you currently live and you tell me to what extent it differs from what you knew in Montreal. It is surely unnecessary to explain to you at length that such an observation must lead those who understand the value of the Torah* and the mitzvos* and who find themselves in a place afflicted with as many moral deficiencies as you describe, to invest themselves, with vitality and energy, in the broadest manner, to do everything possible to change such a situation, to lead it, little by little, toward the other extreme. And, who knows? Perhaps this is the essential reason why you and your husband must ensure your material livelihood in this place. Indeed, it is there that your moral sustenance is to be found, thanks to the actions you will carry out in order to improve the situation in the spiritual domain.

You know the letter (note 2: Published in his Igros Kodesh, volume 7, Letter no. 1883. See also volume 5, Letter no. 1312 and volume 9, Letter no. 2930) of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, in the name of his grandfather, the Rebbe Maharash*, whose merit protects us, according to which Hashem* can grant material livelihood in any place. It is therefore inconceivable that you should be unable to act where you find yourself. How much more is this the case for someone who has had the merit of knowing the teachings of Chassidus*, its customs and practices, of obtaining the blessing and assistance of our masters, in order to know success in spreading Judaism and everything pertaining to it.

Consequently, independently of the question of your future settlement, which, in any event, does not concern this summer, during which you will surely remain in place, you must, in my opinion, begin, with the appropriate goodwill, to search for the means of spreading Judaism, you yourself and your husband. Without a doubt, the affirmation of our Sages* will be fulfilled in this matter, according to which "if you make efforts, they will be crowned with success." It is impossible to measure the merit that all of this represents and, in fact, even if you were still in Montreal, it would be justified to come and settle in this place in order to accomplish all of this. In this case, you already find yourself on the spot and who knows? If you put into practice there the mission of spreading the wellsprings (note 3: Of Chassidus*), perhaps you will pave the way to leave this place "with great spoil," in the terms of the verse, that is, with many accomplishments for Judaism and Chassidus*, in order to go elsewhere.

I am bypassing the queue to send you this letter, in the hope that the lines above will have their effect, that you will begin to exert an influence on your surroundings, in particular regarding Pesach*. May Hashem* grant you success. With my blessing for a kosher* and joyful festival of Pesach*,

לאחר שתיקה ארוכה התקבל מכתבה מב׳ ניסן ,שגם ממנו לא

ברורה הסיבה לכך שבמשך כל הזמן לא הודיעה מהסתדרותה ב . . .

מה שכותבת אודות הסביבה במקומה הנוכחי ,עד כמה איננה כמו

הסביבה במונטריאול - ,בטח מיותר לבאר באריכות ,שזה עצמו צריך

לעורר את אלו היודעים את יוקר התורה ומצוות ,ובהמצאם בסביבה כזו

שחסר ,כפי שכותבת ,כל כך הרבה ברוחניות ,להשקיע עצמם בחיות

ובמרץ המירביים כדי לעשות מה שניתן ,לשנות מצב כזה ובמשך הזמן

להביא גם לקצה השני ,ומי יודע אולי זו בכלל עיקר הכוונה שהיא ובעלה

פרנסתם היא ב . . .לעת עתה ,בשביל הפרנסה הרוחנית שעלי׳ לקבל שם,

ע״י מעשי׳ לשפר את המצב הרוחני ב . . .

וכידוע מכתב חמי כ״ק אדמו״ר בזה בשם זקנו כ״ק אדמו״ר

מוהר״ש -זצוקללה״ה נבג״מ זי״ע ,שפרנסה גשמית השי״ת יכול לתת

בכל מקום וכו׳ ,והרי לא יתכן שבהיותה ב . . .לא יוכלו לפעול ובפרט

אלו שזכו לתורת החסידות והדרכותי׳ והנהגותי׳ וגם לקבל את הברכה

והסיוע של רבותינו נשיאינו ,להצליח בעבודת הפצת היהדות ועניני׳.

ולכן לדעתי ,מבלי להתייחס לשאלה היכן תתיישבו בעתיד ,ובכל

אופן אין זה נוגע לקיץ זה ,בו ודאי תהיו ב . . .

יש להתחיל לחפש ברצון הראוי ,דרכים ואופנים כיצד להשפיע

ביהדות ,הן היא והן בעלה שי׳ ,ובטח גם בזה יקויים מאמר חז״ל יגעת

ומצאת ,והזכות שבזה הרי אין לשער ,עד שמסתבר שגם אם היו

במונטריאול ,הי׳ כדאי לנסוע ל . . .כדי לפעול בזה ,ובפרט שכבר

נמצאים שם במקום ,ומי יודע ,הרי יתכן ,שכאשר תמלא את השליחות

בהפצת המעיינות ב , . . .תתברר ממילא הדרך ,שכבר אפשר ליסוע משם,

וכלשון הכתוב ברכוש גדול של ריבוי מעשים טובים עבור יהדות וחסידות
