Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6154 — Prayer

By the grace of Hashem*,

I am responding to the letter of 27 Adar*, which was written on your behalf. It states that you are living in a non-observant milieu and you therefore fear the influence that this environment might exert upon you, upon your study of the Torah*, upon your practice of the mitzvos*. In fact, the opposite is true. You are in the army. Now, an even more scrupulous practice of the Torah* and the mitzvos*, in general, of everything linked to holiness, in particular, is incumbent precisely upon those who are in this situation. Moreover, upon this judicious behavior, in accordance with what has just been said, depends not only the fate of a certain person, but also that of the entire army, in general, as it is said (Devarim* 23:15): "Your camp shall be holy and no abomination shall be seen in it." Indeed, if this were the case: "He would turn away from you," Hashem* forbid. And, you will consult the commentators of the Torah* at this reference. Hashem* expects all of this from you and it is therefore certain that you can put His commandments into practice.

It would be good for you to make contact with the young men of the Chabad* association who have been in the army. They will indicate to you how to intensify your practice of the Torah* and the mitzvos*. And, nothing can withstand the will. You surely know the custom of reading Tehillim* according to their monthly division, every day after the morning prayer. Similarly, every weekday, you will give a few coins to tzedakah*. With my blessing to convey good news, for a kosher* and joyful festival of Pesach*,

במענה למכתב מכ"ז אדר כתוב עבורו, ותוכנו שנמצא הוא בסביבה של חפשים וחושש הוא להרושם שתעשה סביבה זו עליו בהנוגע לקיום התורה והמצוה וכו'.

והנה מובן אשר אדרבה כיון שנמצא הוא בצבא, על תוספת זהירות בעניני התורה והמצוה בכלל ובעניני קדושה ביחוד נצטוו כל אלה שבמצב זה, ולא עוד אלא שבהנהגתם הטובה מתאים להאמור תלוי לא רק גורלם אלא גורל כל הצבא, וכמ"ש והי' מחנך קדוש ולא יראה בך ערות דבר, - (כי באם לאו, הרי אז, ח"ו) - ושב מאחריך (דברים כ"ג טו) ועיין שם במפרשי התורה, וכיון שהקב"ה דורש את זה מאתם, בודאי שאפשר הדבר לקיים ציוויו.

ומהנכון שיתקשר עם צעירי אגודת חב"ד מאלו שהיו בצבא והם יורוהו איך להוסיף בקיום התורה והמצוה, ואין לך דבר העומד בפני הרצון.

בודאי יודע מהתקנה לאמר השיעור תהלים חדשי - כפי שנחלק התהלים לימי החדש - בכל יום אחר תפילת הבקר, וכן אשר בכל יום חול קודם התפילה יפריש איזה פרוטות לצדקה.
