Volume 17 · Letter 3

By the grace of Hashem*,

2 Nissan* 5718,

Brooklyn,

To the Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, who devotes himself to communal needs, of multiple accomplishments, Rav Yehoshua Shneur Zalman (note 1: Rav Y. Sh. Z. Serebrianski, of Melbourne, Australia. See, on his subject, Letter no. 5961),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I am responding to your letter from the conclusion of Shabbos*. You have no doubt already received my response to your previous letters. However, I observe, in your letter, a contradiction between the beginning and the end. Indeed, you begin by speaking to me of the gatherings, the Chassidic* farbrengens*, the discourses, the closeness of hearts that resulted from them. Then, you conclude by telling me that nothing is going well. Now, for several years already, we have grown accustomed to the intense and profound darkness of this period of the heel of Mashiach*. Nevertheless, this situation itself must remain limited, for the infinite exists only in the domain of good and holiness. It has no equivalent on the other side. I mean to say that you must take a sheet of paper, describe on it the difficult situation in which you found yourself two or three years ago and that which this institution (note 2: The Yeshivah* Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak Lubavitch of Melbourne) currently experiences. You will observe an evolution which, according to the ways of nature, had no reason to occur. And, I will mention only two points that occurred recently:

A) A grant of four thousand five hundred pounds was awarded for the construction, during the meeting of the Rome conference, whereas here, it had been decided not to give a cent for this project. Furthermore, in Rome, no effort was made, according to the ways of nature, for an agreement to be given to a position diametrically opposed to the previous one.

B) You say, in your letter, that the Lieber family gave the entire amount that the Yeshivah* needed to finance the construction. Now, even in your current state of discouragement, which has no reason to be, I wonder whether you can find a natural explanation for the way this occurred.

In fact, these proofs are given only as a complement. Indeed, a clear teaching has already been stated, according to which everything that weakens action linked to the Torah* and the mitzvos* surely finds its source in the evil inclination, as the Hayom Yom* establishes, at the date of 23 Sivan*, that is to say, in what is the opposite of the will of the Supreme King, the Holy One, blessed be He. Now, as the Kuntres U'Maayan* and numerous texts explain, whoever refuses to deceive himself knows that there is an alternative: "Are you with us... (note 3: Or do you belong to the other side)?" From the standpoint of will, as opposed to intellect, the fact that an accomplishment is arduous or that it is easy from start to finish does not enter into consideration at all. Of course, my purpose is not to deliver a discourse to you, but rather to clarify the situation. Discouragement has its source in the advances and stratagems of the evil inclination. Now, just as one fights against it and against its attacks when they bear upon a mitzvah* of the Torah* in the literal sense, which must be self-evident to you, it must be strictly the same for what is the subject of our discussion.

Of course, this does not mean that the functioning of the Chabad* institutions in Australia is perfect, that it would not be possible to improve or add. Such perfection is not conceivable in our world, after the sin of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. And, as you know, it is required not only to make an effort, but also that this effort take the appropriate form. One must therefore constantly search for deficiencies and endeavor to fill them, to remedy them. Conversely, discouragement and dejection are of no use and they will not save you, any more than what you write to me.

Your present letter and the previous one seem to indicate that you have now adopted an extreme position, according to which you can rely on no one, for the most accessory action as for the most fundamental one. Now, if you do not manage to accomplish everything, this is the most tangible proof that you cannot assume all these tasks. And, it is of course out of the question to entrust the most secondary tasks or those that require the language of the country to other people. Thus, your conception has the following immediate consequence: You do not seek anyone's counsel, for the alternative is such that if you know what needs to be done, you have no need of others' advice and if your understanding does not allow you to reach a conclusion, of what use would their reasoning be to you? It is clear that all of this makes no sense. Indeed, the Mishnah* establishes that "Only One can judge alone." There is no need to demonstrate this, so evident is it and so concretely does it verify itself at every step.

May Hashem* grant that you recognize the truth, that you understand that you can exist without calling into question the existence of others, that one completes the other, that no one should be discouraged because he needs to be counseled or guided, because he must sometimes correct an error. There is no reason at all to abandon the work because of this, quite the contrary. I await good news of all this. You will tell me that, in the end, you will put all of this into practice, with joy and enthusiasm. And, you will redouble your ardor in the good portion that has been entrusted to you by divine Providence, since you are one of those who direct the spreading of the wellsprings (note 4: Of Chassidus*) in your country, Australia. May Hashem* grant that this be accomplished, with deep and genuine joy and enthusiasm, in good health. With my blessing for a kosher* and joyful festival of Pesach*, to convey good news to me as soon as possible,

M. Schneerson,
