Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6141 — Community

Volume 16 · Letter 370 · To: grands Rabbanim

By the grace of Hashem*,

29 Adar* 5718,

Brooklyn,

To the great Rabbanim*, men who fear Hashem*, devote themselves to communal needs, and have manifold accomplishments, members of the Rabbinical Tribunal, of the Orthodox community of the holy city of Jerusalem, may it be restored and rebuilt by our righteous Mashiach*, very soon and in our days, Amen, may Hashem* grant you long life,

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I have received your letter of the 11th of the month of Adar*, in which you speak to me about a mixed swimming pool, Hashem* forbid. You no doubt know what the public reaction is here on this matter. May Hashem* grant that there be fulfilled very soon, in our holy city of Jerusalem, what our holy Torah* says: "I have filled the faithful city with justice. Righteousness resides therein. And, He called it (note 1: The Rebbe notes: See the Zohar*, vol. 3, pp. 2b and 285a) city of justice, faithful city." More profoundly, the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, explains that Jerusalem describes the perfection of fear (note 2: The Rebbe notes: According to the Tosafos*, in Tractate Taanis* 16a: "This is why we do not give." Minchas Shai* on Yehoshua* 10:2). Simultaneously, the mountain of holiness is the summit of love, its most elevated form. You will consult the lengthy explanation developed by the Likkutei Torah*, in Parshas Devarim*, page 60b. And, you know the words of the Sifri*, Devarim* 6:5, according to which there is no love in the place of fear and no fear in the place of love, except for the Holy One, blessed be He, Himself.

I send you my respects and my blessing to convey good news of all this, to attain the perfection of good — what is good for Heaven and good for the creatures — and you will consult Tractate Kiddushin* 40a. And, one confers merit upon the propitious days between Purim* and Pesach*, when one brings one redemption close to another — that of Purim*, when they remained "servants of Achashverosh*," and the complete redemption, for "in Nissan* they were redeemed and in Nissan* they will be redeemed," according to the opinion retained by the Halachah* in the known dispute (note 3: The Rebbe notes: See, in particular, the Midrash* Shemos Rabbah*, chapter 15, paragraph 11, the Zohar*, vol. 2, p. 120a and vol. 3, p. 249a) on this subject — the true and complete redemption by our righteous Mashiach*, as it is said: "As in the days of your exodus from Egypt, I will show you wonders."

With my blessing for a kosher* and joyful festival of Pesach*,

P.S.: I was astonished and deeply pained to learn that certain persons — and I have good hope that they are extremely rare — among the members of the Orthodox community, use the Israeli boats (note 4: See, on this subject, Letter no. 5898), whose crew and owners are Jewish and which travel during the holy Shabbos*, as is explained at length elsewhere. There is not the shadow of a doubt that this constitutes a public transgression of Shabbos* and of labors defined by the Torah*. Can one believe such a thing? And, this specifically concerns the holy city of Jerusalem (note 5: The Rebbe notes: See Yirmiyahu* 17 and the commentary of Rabbi Avraham Ibn Ezra* on the verse Shemos* 20:8, who says that the observance of Shabbos* annulled the decree and that the thrones of the royalty of the House of David were placed in Jerusalem), as our Sages* say, in Tractate Shabbos* 119b, as well as our redemption, which is near, since "if Israel properly observes two Shabbasos*, the son of David will come immediately" and, even more, the Yerushalmi*, Tractate Taanis*, chapter 1, paragraph 1, says: "properly one Shabbos*." You will consult the Likkutei Torah* of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, in Parshas Vayikra*, page 41a. May Hashem* grant that I also have good news of this and that we soon merit the day that will be entirely Shabbos* and rest for eternity.
