Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6140 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 16 · Letter 369 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem*,

28 Adar* 5718,

Brooklyn,

To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, of manifold accomplishments, Rav Avraham Meir (note 1: Rav A. M. Israel, of Brooklyn),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I am responding to your letter from this Monday, in which you observe that the expression "whose merit protects us" is commonly used for the righteous who are in the heavenly spheres, according to your expression, and not for those who still live among us, for long days and good years. In my opinion, the reason is the following. The Jews who live among us in this world, souls clothed in bodies, have a protective role — for example, through their prayer, in accordance with the teaching of our Sages*, which you cite in your letter, regarding the verse: "The shadow has departed from them." It is not the same for the righteous who have left this world, and it is therefore only in this case that mention is made of their merit. And, this term must therefore be interpreted in the sense it receives in Tractate Sotah*, chapter 3, Mishnah* 4 (note 2: According to which the effect of the verification of the Sotah* woman is delayed when she possesses the merit of the Torah*). However, in this case, it is also the merit of the mitzvah* (note 3: And not only that of the Torah*). You will consult this text.

On this occasion, I enclose a pamphlet recently published, on the occasion of the Shabbos* of Parshas Zachor* and the days of Purim* that have just passed. You surely have a fixed time for the study of the Torah*. Indeed, you no doubt know the words of the Ari Zal*, transmitted by his student, Rabbi Chaim Vital*, in the introduction to his book Shaar HaHakdamos*, according to which "it is a mitzvah*, in these generations, to reveal this wisdom." The Sages of later eras have shown to what extent this study is necessary and you will consult, in particular, the Iggeres HaKodesh* of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, chapter 26, and the Kuntres Etz HaChaim*, by his great-great-grandson, the Rebbe Rashab*.

With my respects and my blessing,

M. Schneerson,

The question that should indeed be asked regarding the expression "whose merit protects us" is, in fact, the following. Why establish a link between the merit and the righteous person, say that he protects in this way? Is it not explained that a father does not confer merit upon his son? Indeed, the Tosafos*, in Tractate Sotah* 10b, state a first explanation according to which this applies only to idolatry. As the Rebbe Rashab* writes in his testament Chanoch LaNaar*: "He who has eyes will understand the meaning of the expression: 'The father does not save his son.' He will see that this applies to what the father does for himself and not for his son, which therefore serves him no purpose. It is not so for the manner in which the son saves the father, or even for what he accomplishes personally, without the intention of conferring merit upon his father, but solely as a good deed, following the path that Hashem* has prescribed for all of Israel in our holy Torah*, fulfilling every practice with scrupulousness. In such a case, every positive act of the son effectively saves the father from Gehinnom*, introduces him into Gan Eden*. The prayer liturgy says: 'He remembers the kindnesses of the fathers.' This means that He remembers for us the covenant He contracted with our ancestors."

It is therefore necessary for the father to pray or to act for his son. You will consult, in particular, the definition of the merit of the fathers that appears in Tractate Shabbos* 55a, the Midrash* Vayikra Rabbah*, chapter 36, paragraph 6, and the Yerushalmi*, Tractate Sanhedrin*, chapter 10, paragraph 1. This leads, furthermore, to questioning the expression: "His memory will be a blessing for eternity," which can be applied to every righteous person, according to the Sefer Chassidim*, chapter 980 and its commentaries. On the other hand, "whose merit protects us" refers to the righteous who are guides of Israel or masters of the Torah*, who teach it to all. Of those who speak of their teaching, study it, follow their ways and their teachings, it is said: "Your children — these are the students." This is self-evident. This point will not be developed here.
