Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6133 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 16 · Letter 362
By the grace of Hashem*,
25 Adar* 5718,
Brooklyn,
Blessings and greetings (note 1: This letter is addressed to the wife of Rav Yitzchak Gansburg, of Tel Aviv. See, on his subject, Letter no. 5884),
I am responding to your letter from the end of Shevat*, in which you describe the activity of your husband, may Hashem* grant him long life, since his return from here and what results from it for your family, for he is particularly busy and, according to your expression, even in our milieu, such behavior is observed with surprise. I must, first of all, dismiss this last argument. Indeed, the foundation and the beginning of all four parts of the Shulchan Aruch* is: "One will not be affected by the mockers." Moreover, one may question the reason for this mockery, wonder whether it is not jealousy, for example. May Hashem* grant that it be "rivalry among scholars," which "multiplies wisdom."
Regarding your argument itself, it is clear that you are broadly right. A husband and a father must devote time to his wife and to his children. It is absolutely evident that this is no less important than the other mitzvos* of our holy Torah*. You know the words of the Rebbe Rashab* (note 2: See, on this subject, Letter no. 3912) on this subject, according to which "just as it is necessary to put on Tefillin*... (note 3: Every day, it is equally necessary to devote a quarter of an hour, every day, to reflecting on how to educate one's children)." At the same time, it is natural that an action undertaken on new ground cannot be reduced in time and limited according to the clock, if one wishes to obtain a solid and stable result. And, if this is so for everyone, how much more is it the case for your husband. You must know that he is not a partisan of the middle way and, when he enters into action, he does so with all his enthusiasm. If it were necessary to reduce it in any way, he would not even engage in it.
However, I presume and I am practically certain that after the initial period of his action in these new domains, everything will return to order and he will assume his responsibilities as a husband and father, as has been said. Moreover, this will detract nothing from the effectiveness of his action in these new domains. You know the example that is given in this regard. Although Hashem* multiplied the Torah* and the mitzvos* for Israel, revealing six hundred and thirteen of them, no mitzvah* contradicts another. Moreover, our Sages* affirm that "one mitzvah* draws another in its wake." You ask me what will become of you. May Hashem* grant that many Jewish women be like you, having the merit of a husband who devotes himself to the education of Jewish children, who draws the hearts of the children of Israel closer to our Father Who is in Heaven. There are no words to define their reward, material and spiritual — that of the entire family and in particular that of the wife who contributes to this domain.
I read with pleasure, at the end of your letter, that you observe the positive fruit of your work at the school, the progress of your class and of the students' behavior. May Hashem* grant that in this matter as well, you increase your success and your blessing. You will convey good news of all the points you raised in this letter.
With my blessing for a kosher* and joyful festival of Pesach* and to convey good news of all this, in good health,
