Volume 16 · Letter 361

By the grace of Hashem*,

24 Adar* 5718,

Brooklyn,

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I am responding to your letter from this Monday. At a propitious moment, I will mention the name of your son, may Hashem* grant him long life, at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, so that he may obtain the fulfillment of his needs and, in particular, better health, regarding what you write. You will surely consult a specialist doctor about the new treatments that have been developed in this area, in order to determine whether they apply to his case.

You will excuse me for what follows, but I must tell you the truth. Very often, what you write about (note 1: In this case, a skin disease) is the result of the fact that, in its time, when the mother was pregnant with this child, she did not observe, as should have been done, the principles and laws of family purity. If this was indeed the case, Hashem* forbid, one can, to a certain extent, rectify and transform what occurred by observing them now in the strictest manner and, furthermore, by persuading others to do the same. Hashem* searches the hearts and He will see that you have made the decision to act in this way personally, to convince those around you to do so. He will therefore make the medical treatment effective and it will heal, to a large extent, what has just been said (note 2: This skin disease). If you commit yourself fully in this direction, it will indeed be a complete healing. I hope that you will find the appropriate words to explain all of this also to your wife. May Hashem* grant that in this matter, you be able to announce good news to me.

It would be good to have the Tefillin* checked and also the Mezuzah* (note 3: Presumably those of the household), so that they conform to the Halachah*. Every weekday morning, before the prayer, you will give tzedakah* and your wife will adopt the positive custom of virtuous Jewish women, which consists of giving tzedakah* every time one lights the candles, on the eve of Shabbos* and the festivals.

With my blessing to convey good news,

On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,

the secretary,
