Volume 16 · Letter 341 · To: sens simple

By the grace of Hashem*,

13 Adar* 5718,

Brooklyn,

Shalom* u'vracha*,

You tell me that it has been proposed to you to speak, in various places, on behalf of Chabad* (note 1: Presumably to give lectures). Now, you feel within yourself that you are not yet ready for this, that what you speak of is too lofty for you. It is surely unnecessary to explain to you that this is merely a stratagem of the evil inclination, as the notes of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, explain regarding the Torah*, and the same principle indeed applies in this case.

Indeed, even the greatest person cannot attain an exhaustive understanding, for "it is longer than the earth, broader than the sea." Conversely, the simplest person possesses a part of the Torah*, which he can therefore understand. Moreover, Divine Providence has entrusted you with a mission connected to good education, based on sacred values. It is therefore certain that you have the means to carry it out. But, naturally, you are like all other Jews, who must advance by stages and know elevation in the domain of holiness, which means that these men have not yet attained fullness, that they still experience lack — which is also the case of yesterday's situation compared to tomorrow's, in the heavenly domain. Indeed, everything must occur in its time, so that there is a time to make an effort toward oneself and one toward others.

Some justify the way they view their work by affirming that their words will not be accepted, for they are not worthy of them — for example, from the standpoint of the feelings of their heart. Nevertheless, it is known that it is said: "Accept the truth from whoever speaks it." Even if the way you describe your situation is accurate, doubt still remains, for a person is not objective concerning himself. He therefore diverts the judgment, sometimes to the right (note 2: By overestimating his own capacities), but sometimes also to the left (note 3: By judging himself with too much severity). This is self-evident.

The central point of all this is the following: "We are workers of the day" (note 4: Charged with making the day, with illuminating). As the Tzemach Tzedek* emphasizes, we must illuminate, as it is said: "And Elokim* called the light day." Consequently, when a worker receives a task from his employer, it is certain that he can carry it out. Conversely, it is not for him to conduct an investigation and to inquire why the employer did not choose another worker. You must understand this analogy. I send you my blessing of success in your sacred mission, in all of this and to convey good news, including about your students and, naturally, about yourself.

With my blessing for a joyful Purim* and to convey good news of all this,

You ask me why it is precisely a leap forward that enabled matter to be created from the spiritual. The explanation resides in this very expression. It is a leap forward relative to the natural order, to what is possible within the chain of worlds. The explanation is as follows. In the plain sense, a great force is necessary in order to leap forward, much more than to walk in a progressive manner. It is therefore the same for creation. Furthermore, one must know that there are several kinds of leaps forward, that these can be more or less significant. You will consult the Likkutei Torah*, Shir HaShirim*, page 15b.
