Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6108 — Community
Volume 16 · Letter 337 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem*,
11 Adar* 5718,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Hillel (note 1: Rav H. Medalye, of Leeds. See, on his subject, Letter no. 5822),
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I have received your letter from the conclusion of the Shabbos* of Parshas Yisro*. At its beginning, you explain why there was no Chassidic* farbrengen* (note 2: In the synagogue of which Rav Medalye is the rabbi) on the luminous day of 19 Kislev*, the day of victory and liberation. Indeed, the Chabad* synagogue of your city has emptied of its elderly. Now, this explains nothing and, quite the contrary, reinforces the question. A true communal leader, particularly one who is the Rav* of his community, does not address only attentive ears, which have become so through the intervention of previous leaders. He also exercises his influence on the young, so that they, in turn, may have attentive ears and follow in the footsteps of the elders.
One can concretely verify that this manner of acting has become easier in recent years. Indeed, the young are frightened by what is happening and revolutions are multiplying. There is therefore no reason to uproot the tree in order to replant it elsewhere. It has, in any case, already been uprooted. According to the well-known expression of our Sages*, "he sowed turmoil in the entire world." In fact, this is not about changing location in a material sense, but rather about being cut off from one's foundation and content. The young, who were animated by certain ideals, are now becoming aware that what they considered fundamental has proven to be empty.
You cite several texts relating to the birthday (note 3: See, on this subject, Letter no. 5822). You do not accept the proof brought by the Yerushalmi*, in Tractate Rosh Hashanah*, chapter 3, paragraph 6, and you mention others in its place. This surprises me from two points of view:
A) The Yerushalmi* clearly affirms that the star of a person is strong on that day.
B) The other texts you cite make no allusion to this.
With my blessing for a joyful festival of Purim* and to convey good news of all this,
