By the grace of Hashem*,

7 Adar* 5718,

Brooklyn,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Shmuel Elazar (note 1: Rav S. E. Shaoulsohn, of Jerusalem. See, on his subject, Letter no. 4867),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I have received your letter of 26 Shevat*. At a propitious moment, I will mention all those you cite at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects you, so that each one obtain the fulfillment of his needs, in accordance with what you write.

You allude to an agreement concerning the Israeli boats (note 2: Traveling during Shabbos*. See, on this subject, Letter no. 5898). In general, there is no reason to formulate an opinion as long as one does not have precise information. However, according to what this press clipping seems to indicate, one may wonder whether this is truly progress or the contrary. It is clear that the voyage itself, and not merely the docking, is forbidden, since it involves the transgression of labors forbidden by the Torah*. There is in this a public desecration of Shabbos*, according to the Torah*, such that their wine and their bread... (note 3: Are forbidden, belonging to someone who transgresses Shabbos*), as the Shulchan Aruch* explains. What good will a kashrus* supervisor accomplish in this matter? Quite the contrary, the delegation of such a supervisor by a Rav* will be... (note 4: Interpreted as a legitimization of such a voyage). I therefore await more precise news.

May Hashem* allow it to be finally understood that the name of the Holy Land, also recognized and accepted by the other nations, is not linked to the past, just as it was said in those days (note 5: At the time of Purim*): "Your Elokim* is asleep," which also evokes old age, that which is ancient (note 6: Yashen* means both "one who sleeps" and "ancient"). Its value is eternal, daily, and it retains its full importance. Therefore, when the Jews hold power, or at least when the other nations are not powerful, all the provisions of our Torah* apply fully.

Our Sages* say that Shabbos* is considered equivalent to the entire Torah*, according to the Yerushalmi*, Tractate Nedarim*, chapter 3, paragraph 5, and their statement must not be divorced from its literal meaning, with all that follows from it. It is painful to have to evoke such terrible things. It is all the more terrifying that one does not hasten to rectify the situation, nor even to make known the clearly decided halachic* ruling on this matter. In this way, there would be no deception, everything would be clear and one would know "who is with us."

As "in those days, at this time," when "many among the nations converted to Judaism," may Hashem* grant that at the present hour, one may observe the consequences of the fact that "our faith is different from those of the other nations" — not through a profound analysis carried out in the privacy of a room, but in a concrete and clearly affirmed manner.

With my blessing,
