Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6093 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 16 · Letter 322
By the grace of Hashem*,
Sixth day of Adar* 5718,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the attention of the participants in the Talmud* class, in the Tzemach Tzedek* synagogue, of the Ari Zal* rite, in New York, may Hashem* grant you long life,
I greet you warmly and bless you,
I have learned, with pleasure, that your public study of the Torah* continues and that you are concluding, these days, Tractate Pesachim*, which is timely — thirty days before the festival (note 1: Of Pesach*). This tractate concludes (note 2: See, on this subject, Likkutei Sichos*, vol. 11, from page 42) with the blessing of Pesach* and that of the sacrifice, in the Mishnah*, with the blessing of the redemption of the firstborn and that of Shehecheyanu*, in the Gemara* commenting on this Mishnah*.
The Pesach* sacrifice and its definition are linked to circumcision, which is a condition that must be fulfilled in order to offer it. Both therefore belong to the same category, as the Mishnah* states at the beginning of Tractate Kerisos*. More profoundly, they indeed share a single content, which is the conclusion of a covenant between the Holy One, blessed be He, and Israel. Circumcision distinguishes the Jews from the other nations and Hashem* liberates them from the exile that bears the name of Egypt. Furthermore, the Shelamim* sacrifice (note 3: Of the same etymology as Shalom*, peace) brings peace into the world (note 4: The Rebbe notes: Torat Kohanim* on Vayikra* 3:1), introduces spirituality into matter. This is why the meat is consumed both by the Kohanim* and by the owners of the sacrifice, consumed in the most literal sense.
This allows us to understand the meaning of this passage of the Gemara* and the connection that can be made with the redemption of the firstborn, in the same way as the link between the Pesach* sacrifice and circumcision discussed here. For, this is indeed the redemption of "My firstborn son, Israel," for which the blessing of Shehecheyanu* is recited, a blessing pronounced only regarding a visible and tangible good (note 5: The Rebbe notes: Tosafos*, on Tractate Sukkah* 46a). In accordance with the Halachah*, the father of the child, that is, our Father Who is in Heaven, recites these two blessings.
May Hashem* therefore, very soon, through the intermediary of our righteous Mashiach*, redeem His only son from the exiles. Then, we will pronounce before Him a new song (note 6: The Rebbe notes: Tosafos*, on Tractate Pesachim* 116b): "Behold, this is our Elokim*," according to the conclusion of Tractate Taanis*, "He has kept us alive and sustained us until this time" (note 7: According to the text of the Shehecheyanu* blessing).
With my respects and my blessing to convey good news,
P.S.: At a propitious moment, I will mention all those whose names you cite in your letter at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us.
