Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6086 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 16 · Letter 314 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu
By the grace of Hashem*,
3 Adar* 5718,
Brooklyn,
To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Rav Ephraim, the Shochet* (note 1: Rav E. Grinblatt, of Memphis),
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I am responding to your letter of 26 Shevat*:
A) What should be done, in the synagogue, concerning the silent prayer and the repetition of the chazzan*, if there are only six persons who have not yet prayed?
One then adopts the position of the Magen Avraham*, chapter 69, paragraph 4, which is retained, in the Halachah*, by the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and Decisor of the hidden dimension of the Torah*, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and Decisor of the revealed dimension of the Torah*, according to which one prays silently, then the chazzan* repeats the prayer aloud. You cite the Shaarei Teshuvah*, chapter 55, paragraph 9, which reproduces the Magen Avraham* and replaces "six" with "ten." It seems that an error crept into the early editions, a Vav* having been replaced by a Yud* (note 2: The Vav having the numerical value of six and the Yud, ten). Indeed, several authors cite the Magen Avraham* and all speak of six, explaining that this constitutes the majority of the ten.
B) How to read the Torah* during the four fasts (note 3: The Fast of Gedalyah, the 10th of Teves, the Fast of Esther, and the 17th of Tammuz)? I reproduce below what is stated on this subject in one of the pamphlets.
On this occasion, I remind you of the necessity of maintaining the three studies pertaining to the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*, which are well known. We have heard many times from my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, that they apply to every person and that they have a propitious effect in various domains.
With my blessing,
On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,
the secretary,
P.S.: The pamphlet of the Reshimos* on the book of Eichah*, in the collection of customs, states: "The Torah reading of the four fasts can be performed even if there are only three persons who are fasting in the synagogue, according to the Responsa of the Tzemach Tzedek*, Gate of Addenda, chapter 8. This point is discussed in the Responsa Chasam Sofer*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 157; the Maharam Schick*, chapter 289; the Sdei Chemed*, Corner of the Field, collection of laws, Blessing of the Mitzvos, chapter 2, paragraph 3; the Tzafnas Paneach*, volume 2, chapter 31; the Minchas Yitzchak*, chapter 65."
