To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Rav Naftali (note 1: Rav N. Kraus, of Tel Aviv. See, on this subject, Letter no. 5283),

I have received your letter concerning the "Conversations with Youth." I have transmitted it to the Merkaz L'Inyonei Chinuch*, which will give you a detailed response, but, in any case, the general idea of it is the following. You are, of course, right to affirm that a textual translation is not suited for the youth. I have myself written this, on various occasions, regarding translations intended for adults. Those that are textual prevent the widening of the circle of those who read, study, and consult them, which is not the case for the talks — I mean for the drawings and for the manner of producing them, which must indeed be in the form they have in the "Conversations" (note 2: The Rebbe cites both the name of the Yiddish edition, Shmuessen*, and that of the English edition, Talks). And, this is also the case for the French edition, so as to underscore the unity of all editions.

I am surprised that you do not specify, in your letter, the time you devote to the study of Chassidus* and what you have added to it, following what you wrote to me on this subject several months ago. I send you my blessing to convey good news of all this. You will also tell me that you are making use of the possibilities granted to you to influence the circle of your readers by disseminating the wellsprings (note 3: Of Chassidus*), including to those on the outside. Without a doubt, some of your readers find themselves there (note 4: "Outside" of Jewish practice).

והנקודה הכללית אשר ודאי צודק הוא שאין תרגום מלולי מתאים לנוער, וכמו שכתבתי זה כ"פ גם בהנוגע לתרגום בשביל מבוגרים, שתרגום מלולי מפריע מלהרחיב חוג הקוראים וגם חוג הלומדים ומעיינים משא"כ בהנוגע לשער השיחות, כוונתי להציורים ואופנם צ"ל כמו שהוא בהשמועסין והטאקס וכן גם בהוצאה הצרפתית שלהם, בכדי להדגיש האחדות שלו כל הוצאות אלו.

לפלא שאין מזכיר במכתבו מקביעות עתים בלימוד תורת החסידות ומהוספה עליהם בהמשך למ"ש בזה לפני איזה חדשים.
