23 Shevat* 5718,

To the leaders of the Shomrei Shabbos* benevolent association, may Hashem* grant them long life,

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I received, with pleasure, your letter of 22 Shevat* and the report of activities of your benevolent association — an activity whose fruits are consumed in this world, while the capital is preserved for the World to Come. You also inform me of the holding of your annual meeting, at the conclusion of the holy Shabbos* that blesses the month of Adar*, which approaches. You will celebrate, on this occasion, your forty-ninth anniversary — that is, seven times seven years.

According to the saying of the Baal Shem Tov* that we heard from my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, one must, from everything, draw a teaching for the service of the Creator. And, this is also the case here, since this year 5718 is the sixth of the Shemittah* cycle, according to the opinion of the Geonim*, which is retained for the Halachah* in the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, Laws of Loans, paragraph 36. And, the verses (Devarim* 15:9-10) state, precisely regarding this period: "The seventh year approaches, that of the Shemittah*." In such a case, "you shall give him." Moreover, this alone does not suffice and an additional condition is furthermore set: "you shall not have an aching heart in giving him," and the conclusion of this verse specifies the reward for this practice: "Hashem* your Elokim* will bless you in all your deeds and wherever you send your hand."

Certainly, these verses refer to "the period during which one does not do the Will of Hashem*," as is stated subsequently, "for the poor will not disappear," and as the Sifri* specifies at this reference. But, the Mishnah* affirms that "one mitzvah* leads to another," especially when it concerns that of benevolence and tzedakah*, which is considered the entirety of the mitzvos*. May Hashem* therefore grant that we serve Him by "doing His Will" and that the promise be fulfilled according to which "there shall be no poor among you."

בצירוף הידיעה על דבר האסיפה השנתית במוצאי שבת קדש מברכין חדש אדר הבע"ל,

בה נגמרת שנת המ"ט שבע שבועות.

וע"פ פתגם כ"ק הבעש"ט אשר כ"פ שמענוהו מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר אשר מכל דבר יש ללמוד ענין בעבודת הבורא, י"ל גם בזה - בקשר עם זה, אשר השנה שנת ה'תשי"ח היא שנתה הששית לשמיטה לדעת הגאונים, הובא לפסק הלכה בשולחנו הטהור של כ"ק אדמו"ר הזקן (הלכות הלואה סעיף לו) ואמר הכתוב ביחוד על זמן זה, אשר קרבה שנת השבע שנת השמיטה גו' הנה נתן תתן לו (ואין זה מספיק אלא עוד תנאי) ולא ירע לבבך בתתך לו (ומתן שכרו בצדו, כסיום וחותם הכתוב) יברכך ה' אלקיך בכל מעשיך ובכל משלח ידיך (דברים טו, ט-י)

ויהי רצון אשר אף שכתובים האמורים מדברים בזמן שאין עושין רצונו של מקום, כמ"ש לאחרי זה, כי לא יחדל אביון וגו' וכפירוש רז"ל בספרי שם, הנה מיוסד על דבר המשנה, מצוה גוררת מצוה, ובפרט מצות גמילות חסדים וצדקה, ששקולה כנגד כל המצות. יביא זה לאופן עבודה דעושין רצונו של מקום, ויקוים היעוד לא יהי' בך אביון.

בברכת הצלחה בעבודתם בקדש מתוך הרחבה אמיתית בגו"ר.
