Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6070 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 16 · Letter 298
By the grace of Hashem*,
22 Shevat* 5718,
Brooklyn,
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I am responding to your letter of 17 Shevat*, in which you write me the following:
A) You inform me of your state of health and of the manner in which you are settled. You conclude by specifying that you are at times discouraged, Heaven forbid.
Such discouragement is, naturally, entirely excluded. As our holy Torah*, Torah* of life, commands, a Jew must never become discouraged. The books of Chassidus*, in particular the holy Tanya*, explain at length why this is so. Indeed, faith demands that this be so, for all Jews are "believers, sons of believers." They know that the Holy One, blessed be He, is the Essence of good, that He effectively directs the world, and that He extends His providence to each one. You understand well what results from this. Everything that Hashem* does is for the good of the person to whom He extends His providence.
You specify, in your letter, that you maintain the studies pertaining to the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*, that you recite Chassidic* discourses, and it is therefore surely unnecessary to say more. A reflection, even a brief one, on all of this will surely allow you to improve your morale. In addition, you surely know the saying of our holy masters according to which: "If you think that all is well, all will indeed be well."
B) You also allude to your brother, to whom a match is being proposed. He wonders whether he must disclose the health problems he has had.
The answer to this question, as to all those concerning a Jew, is stated by the Shulchan Aruch*. In this case, after verifying the details with your attending physician, you will consult a Rav* who decides the Halachah* and you will conform to his opinion.
I read with pleasure, in your letter, that your brother has taken part in the activities of the Chabad* youth association. No doubt he will strengthen his commitment in this direction. The essential addition will pertain to the study of Chabad* Chassidus*, as well as to the adoption of its practices and customs.
With my blessing to convey good news of all this,
On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,
the secretary,
