(21 Shevat 5718)
I have received your letter from Sunday of Parshas* Vaeira*, with what it contained. In the meanwhile, you have surely received my preceding letter. It seems that I anticipated well the manner in which you would formulate your proposal in your latest letter.
A) Concerning what is stated in this letter about the Shema Yisrael*, of which one must complete the two hundred and forty-eight words, and in particular, at the conclusion of this letter, regarding the Shema Yisrael* at bedtime, it seems that an imprecision has crept in and I hasten to correct it, on the basis of what I found in my notes and reproduced in the Hayom Yom*, at the date of 28 Adar Rishon*: "For the Shema Yisrael* at bedtime, after the reading of the three paragraphs, one adds the word Emes*." And, at the date of 17 Iyar*: "In the Shema Yisrael* that one recites in the morning, before the prayer, in order to fulfill one's obligation to read the Shema* at the proper time, one also repeats the three last words and adds the word Emes*. In the Shema Yisrael* that one recites while wearing the Tefillin* of Rabbeinu Tam* or of Shimusha Rabba*, one does not repeat the last words, but one says Emes*."
You say that one adds the word Emes* also in the Shema Yisrael* at bedtime. This contradicts the explanation that some give regarding the Siddur* of the Alter Rebbe*, treating of this subject: "One recites the Shema Yisrael* until the end of the third paragraph," which seems to exclude the word Emes*. In fact, this is not how it should be understood. This remark means that one must indeed recite these three paragraphs. As for the necessity of completing the two hundred and forty-eight words of the Shema Yisrael* at bedtime, I have not received a clear teaching. But, it seems to me that the Chassidim* adopt the position stated by the Shaar HaKollel*, commenting on the Siddur*, chapter 36, paragraph 4, according to which one should repeat the words: "I am Hashem* your Elokim*."
B) You make reference to the Psalm Yoshev B'Seser* (note 1: Psalm 91: "He dwells in the hidden and elevated place"), in the Shema Yisrael* at bedtime, and to the different customs that exist regarding it. I am surprised that you do not specify these differences, which concern not only its conclusion but also its beginning. According to several opinions, one begins with Vihi Noam* (note 2: The last verse of the preceding Psalm: "May the pleasantness of Hashem* our Elokim* be with us"). And, here is what can be said regarding the references you cite:
1. In this matter, the Sefer Chassidim* has a particular opinion. According to it, a song regarding plagues must contain the words: "Hashem*, how numerous are my enemies" (note 3: Psalm 3:2) and even begin with them. This is what the notes of the Bris Olam* on the Sefer Chassidim* state, based on the Yerushalmi*, Tractate Shabbos* and the end of Tractate Eruvin*.
2. More generally, one can be astonished, for there is not a single example showing that a specific title is conferred upon a chapter of the Written Law, even if it concerns only one of its parts and not its entirety. In this case, the song regarding plagues is indeed a passage of this Psalm and not the whole. The Ateres Zekeinim*, chapter 298, citing the Tzeror HaMor*, Vayikra*, indicates that the Psalm in its entirety concerns plagues, including the verse "And may the pleasantness..." (note 2).
3. Some conclude their reading with Meonah* (note 4: Psalm 91, entirety of verse 9: "In Hashem, you have placed your shelter"), and one can reconcile their opinion with that which considers that one must read until Machsi* (note 5: Psalm 91, half of verse 9: "Hashem is my refuge"). Indeed, our Sages* say that a verse that has not been divided must be completed. And, there is no reason to multiply controversies.
4. In any case, one must take into account the custom adopted by all, at the conclusion of Shabbos*, which consists of reciting the entire Psalm Yoshev B'Seser* (note 1). You will consult, on this subject, the Mateh Moshe*. The Zohar*, volume 1, page 14b, specifies that one must then recite a song for plagues. Why would it not be the same for the Shema Yisrael* at bedtime? Of course, one can find reasons other than that of the Zohar* justifying that this Psalm be recited at the conclusion of Shabbos* in its entirety. And, you know what the Tur*, cited by the Magen Avraham*, chapter 295, and the Machatzis HaShekel* say: this Psalm contains one hundred and thirty-six words and it is propitious for obtaining a blessing. It is for this reason that one repeats the verse Vihi Noam* (note 2), as these texts specify. According to the Ateres Zekeinim*, previously cited, however, it is indeed a Psalm for plagues.
