I have received your letter dated the New Year of the Trees (note 1: 15 Shevat), in which you communicate to me the content of your discussion with this doctor, regarding the separation (note 2: Of girls and boys, in the school). You do not specify the points that this gentleman stated in my name, but he no doubt indicated that this practice is not specific to the Jewish faith (note 3: See, on this subject, Letter no. 5212), even if this reference would be, in itself, sufficient. In recent years, indeed, the other nations have also begun to observe the harms of co-education. Educators are aware of the terrible situation that has been established in various schools. However, this information is suppressed, for reasons that are understandable, but that it is impossible to approve.

In my discussion with this gentleman, it seems to me that I also said that it is important, above all, to rectify the concrete action. Consequently, it is possible to approach the question from another angle — that is, to increase the number of students, so that it will, in any case, be necessary to recruit a second teacher or, at the very least, a teaching assistant. And, one can think that, even if it becomes apparent that one is striving to separate the class, the reason invoked (note 4: The number of students) will obscure the deeper reason (note 5: The rejection of co-education), for one will be able to change position in an honorable manner (note 6: A new fact — the increase in the number of students — having intervened).

I took note with pleasure, at the end of your letter, of the discourse you delivered before the community about the one whose Hilloula* we celebrate, my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, leader of Israel. May Hashem* grant that his merit protect each one, within all of Israel, in accordance with the statement of the Mishnah* according to which: "I was created to serve my Creator," with deep vitality and the inspiration of the heart, according to the directives and the request of the one whose Hilloula* is celebrated.

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתב כת"ר מר"ה לאילנות, בו כותב תוכן שיחתו עם ד"ר... שי' בהנוגע לענין ההפרדה, ואף שאינו כותב הנקודות אשר מסר בשמי מר... שי', בודאי מסר גם זה אשר אין זה ענין דוקא של דת ישראל, אף שגם זה די ומספיק, כי גם או"ה בשנים האחרונות התחילו לראות ההיזק בענין התערובות וכנודע להמחנכים מהמצב המבהיל בכמה בתי ספר בזה, אלא שמטעמים מובנים אף כי מופרכים משתיקים את הידיעות בזה, כן כמדומה הזכרתי גם בשיחתי עם מר... שי' אשר כיון שסו"ס לכל לראש צריך לתקן הבפועל, הרי אפשרית גישה גם באופן אחר, כוונתי להרבות תלמידים בהכתות באופן שיוצרכו בלא"ה למורה השני או עכ"פ לעזר מורה, ויש מקום לומר שבאם אפילו ירגישו שמשתדלים בהפרדה, מטעם האמור יעלימו עין מטעם הפנימי, כיון שיהי' פתח חרטה של כבוד, וק"ל...

נעם לי לקרות במכתבו בסיומו ע"ד נאומו לפני קהל המתפללים בהנוגע לבעל ההילולא הוא כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע נשיא ישראל, ויהי רצון שזכותו תגן על כאו"א בתכ"י למילוי תפקידו של כ"א מבנ"י כדבר המשנה אני נבראתי לשמש את קוני באופן של חיות פנימי וטוב לבב כהדרכת בעל ההילולא וכדרישתו.
