Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6056 — Tzedakah
Volume 16 · Letter 284 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem*,
16 Shevat* 5718,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Nissan (note 1: Rav N. Telushkin, of Brooklyn. See, on his subject, Letter no. 4382),
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I am responding to your letter from the New Year of the Trees (note 2: 15 Shevat), with what it contained. At a propitious moment, I will mention the name of your wife, the Rabbanit*, may Hashem* grant her long life, so that she obtain the fulfillment of her needs, in accordance with the content of your letter.
One confers merit upon a propitious day, for "man is like the tree of the field" (note 3: And this is, in this instance, the New Year of the Trees). The New Year of the Trees reveals the vitality in everything concerning the year that follows it. It is for this reason that it is called Rosh*, the head, and not the beginning, as the Alter Rebbe* and his son, the Mitteler Rebbe*, have explained. It infuses increased divine blessings into the needs of each person, within all of Israel.
This is particularly true for those who devote their efforts to the dissemination of the Tree of Life, which presents no negative aspect, as attested by the well-known passage of the Raya Mehemna*, explained by Iggeres HaKodesh*, chapter 26. May Hashem* grant that, for long days and good years, you increase your strength tenfold in the Torah*, in general, and in Chassidus*, in particular — the latter being, more specifically, "my vineyard," which is added to the portion one may have of the other vineyards, to which the Torah* indeed confers this title, but which, for all that, are not "mine."
One can observe that this explanation is also found in the revealed dimension of the Torah*, which defines the mitzvah* that one cannot entrust to others for its performance. This mitzvah*, at its highest level, takes precedence over Torah* study, even though heavenly concerns do not equal a simple mitzvah*, not even on one point, as Tractate Moed Katan* 9b states. No doubt the third volume of your book (note 4: Entitled "The Torah and the World"), whose forthcoming publication you announce at the end of your letter, will be devoted to this. Moreover, it will treat of the period (note 5: That of the Redemption) that a Jew must, by the opinion of all, dedicate to the fear of Hashem*.
With my respects and my blessing to convey good news of all this,
