To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Israel Chaim (note 1: Rav I. Ch. Friedman, of Brooklyn),
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I am responding to your letter from the eve of the New Year of the Trees (note 2: 15 Shevat), with what was enclosed (note 3: Donations), for which you will find the receipts herein. You tell me of a man who fears the word of Hashem*, but who is poor in his financial means (note 4: Which presumably explained the modesty of his contribution). I am surprised that you do not mention his name. But no doubt you acted with good intention.
I hope that you will find luminous words to explain to him the statement and account of our Sages*, in the Midrash* Vayikra Rabbah*, chapter 3, paragraph 5, underscoring the precedence of the sacrifice of the poor. Based on the Zohar*, volume 3, page 195a, Chassidus* develops a similar explanation regarding prayer, which replaces the sacrifices. It distinguishes, indeed, the prayer of Moshe*, the prayer of the poor, and the prayer of David, and underscores that priority is accorded to the prayer of the poor.
On this occasion, you will also speak to him of the studies of the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*, which are well known. May Hashem* grant that your words emanate from your heart and that they penetrate into his.

במענה למכתבו מאור לר"ה לאילנות עם המוסגר בו שמצו"פ הקבלות.
לפלא שאינו מזכיר שם האיש שכפי כתבו ירא וחרד אבל עני בכסף, ובודאי כוונתו רצוי', ותקותי שימצא אותיות מאירות להסביר להנ"ל מאמר וסיפור חז"ל (ויקרא רבה פ"ג, ה') בענין קרבנו של עני קדמך, וידוע המבואר בדא"ח המיוסד על מאמר הזהר (ח"ג קצה, א) בענין דומה להנ"ל בהנוגע לתפלה שבמקום קרבנות, שישנה תפלה למשה, תפלה לעני ותפלה לדוד, ותפלה לעני היא הקודמת.
ובהזדמנות זו יסביר להנ"ל גם שיעורי חומש תהלים ותניא הידועים, ויהי רצון שיהיו דברים יוצאין מן הלב ונכנסים אל הלב.
