To the young Aharon (note 1: A. Serebrianski, of Melbourne, Australia. See, on his subject, Letter no. 5806),
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I am responding to your letter from the day of the Hilloula*, as well as to the request for a blessing, which will be read, at a propitious moment, at the holy resting place of the one whose Hilloula* we celebrate, my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. You tell me of your activity, which is, according to your expression in your letter, of a new kind. You allude to what you accomplish for young girls.
In reality, this activity is very ancient, as was stated during the Chassidic* farbrengen* at the conclusion of last Shabbos*, regarding the verse: "And Miriam* answered them" — which is expressed (note 2: The word "lahem," meaning "to them," indicating she addressed the men. If this were not the case, it would have said "lahen") in the masculine and not in the feminine, contrary to the grammatical rules. And, the Tanchuma* explains: "When the Children of Israel left the Sea of Reeds, the angels of the Service accompanied them to recite the Song. The Holy One, blessed be He, said to the angels: Let the Children of Israel recite it first. Then came the women and the angels. The question arose as to who would offer praise first. Rabbi Chiya* indicated that the angels should be first, preceding the women, which explained the use of the masculine. Levi responded: By the heavens! I will not accept this. The women will praise Him first."
And, even according to the first opinion, the angels had to obtain the agreement of the women. And one knows the discourse of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose Hilloula* we celebrate, which was delivered on the seventh day of Pesach*, twenty years ago. It demonstrates the superiority of the Song of the women, which was accompanied by tambourines and dances, over that of Moshe* and Israel. You will consult this text.
May Hashem* grant that this activity also meet with considerable success, which includes, above all, a greater number of participants — students and teachers. This is self-evident. Fortunate is the lot of those who devote themselves to this activity.
With my blessing to convey good news of all this,
