Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6052 — Grief & Loss

Volume 16 · Letter 280

By the grace of Hashem*,

14 Shevat* 5718,

Brooklyn,

Blessings and greetings,

I am responding to your letter, which was not dated. You tell me about your brother, who considers himself at a crossroads, since he has completed his military service, subsequently took a mechanics course, but has not yet decided what he will do. He is twenty-two years old.

My opinion is very clear, based on what I have been able to observe among young people of various countries and also of the Holy Land. A period of several years, for those of the same age as your brother, is, very often, the preparation for everything that life will be subsequently. In other words, every effort during these years to strengthen one's conception of the world and of life is entirely justified. There is no reason to spare one's time for this. Such an investment has an immense contribution during the decades that one will live subsequently. Likewise, it is surely unnecessary to specify to you that in our charged and troubled era, it is indispensable to have a strong and solid conception of the world, all the more so since, without this, it is impossible to know peace of mind and moral harmony, which are necessary elements for having a balanced existence.

What has just been said will allow you to understand my conclusion regarding your brother. He must devote at least a semester or a year to the study of our holy Torah*, which is called Torah* of life, and this title must not be separated from its simple meaning. The Torah* delivers, indeed, a teaching for our life in this world and also for daily existence, throughout the week, on Shabbos*, on the festivals, and on the days of awe. As I have said, there is absolutely no loss of time in this. It is, on the contrary, the means of strengthening the decades that follow. When your brother has spent this period of strengthening, he will be able, according to his own idea, to decide how, in what manner, and where he will settle.

One can concretely verify that the most effective effort is the one suggested not only by speech but also by action — that is, by providing the example of the ideal for which one campaigns. This is, of course, the case here. If your conduct and, more generally, your way of life provide the example of what a Jewish woman must be — one who is defined as a daughter of Sarah*, Rivkah*, Rachel*, and Leah* — it is certain that this will have a considerable influence on the members of your family, including your brother.

To conclude, I must react to the beginning of your letter. You tell me that you are not Chabad*, but that you are writing to me nonetheless. Now, this statement contradicts the adage of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya*, founder of Chabad* Chassidus*, according to which Chassidus* is the heritage of the entirety of the Jewish people, of every Jew and every Jewish woman in particular. This conception and its content cannot be held responsible for the fact that, for the moment, certain circles have not fully accepted them. Moreover, these circles themselves, for the most part, are not at fault, for secondary and minor causes interfere, but it is clear that these cannot, on this account, weaken their relationship with this conception. There is, on their part, merely a lack of knowledge, which will surely be rectified in due time.

With my blessing to convey good news of all this and to know success in the influence you exercise upon your surroundings, on the basis of what has just been said,

On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,

the secretary,
